Last meeting of the Lady Chaps and MustangsLUBBOCK, Texas (April 19, 2014) – The seniors shone during their farewell games for Lubbock Christian on Saturday afternoon at PlainsCapital Park, with the five Lady Chaps ending their careers on two wins by defeating the University of the Southwest in a doubleheader by scores of 9-0 and 8-1 as LCU set a single-season record for home runs with 100.
Kirstie Cochran, Mallory Koschany, Rebecca Billings, Megan Sullivan and Diana De La Paz combined for 14 hits, two home runs, six RBI and three stolen bases on their final day as Lady Chaps, with Billings and De La Paz each hitting a homer allowing LCU to eclipse the previous team record of 88 set back in 2010.
Koschany began Saturday's offense for LCU (45-10, 19-4 Heartland) with a deep double to left field, and
Ashton Bell followed with a triple to right field for LCU's first score. With two outs on the board,
Morgan Colburn knocked the ball just beyond the fence for two-run homer and give the Lady Chaps a 3-0 advantage.
Katera Eltsosie belted a home run to left field, De La Paz recorded a single and Billings brought her around on a home run to left field to put LCU on top, 6-0. Back-to-back errors by the Mustangs put Cochran on third after her single to centerfield and placed Koschany on first. Koschany then stole second, and Bell's second triple of the game gave LCU two more runs. A sacrifice fly by Sullivan allowed Bell to cross home to push LCU ahead, 9-0.
Both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way, ending the game in five innings. Eltsosie (24-5) took the win with a pair of hits, a walk and a strikeout, and Ciara Fraher (13-6) suffered the loss with a dozen hits, two walks and a strikeout.
In the bottom of the second in game two, Colburn blasted a double and made her way to third on a Mustang throwing error before De La Paz homered to left field to put LCU up 2-0. Cochran placed a perfect bunt to put her on first and used her speed to steal both second and third base to finish her career with 80 stolen bases, second to fellow senior Koschany, who finished as the all-time leader for LCU with 102. A sacrifice fly by
Katlin Reed then scored Cochran for a 3-0 Lady Chap edge.
Jessica Loiacano registered a homer to centerfield in the third, and Colburn hit the team's century mark in home runs a batter later to extend LCU's lead to 5-0. Southwest (29-13, 17-3 Red River) earned their lone run of the day in the next frame on a score by Jessica Zamora.
Cochran hit a triple to center and Reed again brought her in on a sacrifice fly for another Lady Chap run. Bell doubled to right center, Sullivan singled down the left field line and advanced to second on the throw, and Loiacano's single to right center scored Sullivan to give Lubbock Christian an 8-1 lead. The game officials spotted lightning immediately before the sixth inning began and the decision was made to call the game, giving LCU win number 45 on the season.
Bell (6-1) scored the win with four hits and seven strikeouts, and Brianna Johnson (10-2) was given the loss with 11 hits and two strikeouts.
Deep shots propel Lady Chaps to doubleheader sweep over ENMULUBBOCK, Texas (April 16, 2015) – Five home runs by four Lady Chaps paced Lubbock Christian to a pair of non-conference wins over Eastern New Mexico on Thursday afternoon at PlainsCapital Park by scores of 6-5 and 9-2 to extend LCU's all-time record to 15-0 over the Zias.
LCU (32-11) has won every contest over ENMU (16-26) dating to the 2010 season. Heading into the contest, the Lady Chaps' 1.56 home runs per game led the Heartland Conference and were ranked third in Division II.
Katlin Reed was credited with the first score of the day in the bottom of the third on a shot over the left field fence for a 1-0 Lady Chap lead. Kyra Sirag of ENMU answered in the fourth with her own home run to right center to knot the game at 1-1. Audrey Velasquez walked and advanced to second on a Susannah Chandler single to left center. Morgan Green then made her way to first after a bobbled ball by
Molly Davison as Velasquez scored to put the Zias up 2-1.
Liz Torres registered a single in the bottom of the fourth and scored on an
Ashton Bell homer to left field to give the lead back to the Lady Chaps at 3-2. ENMU pieced together a string of offense the top of the fifth, beginning with a single by Sirag before Velasquez reached on a fielder's choice. A Green single on a full count scored Velasquez to even the score at 3-3, and an Aurelia Sandoval double to right center brought a pair of Zias around for a 5-3 ENMU advantage.
With two outs recorded in the bottom of the fifth,
Sammie Murrietta singled up the middle, and
Jessica Loiacano homered to center field to tie the contest at five each. Davison singled to center to as the leadoff in the sixth, and
Jenny Rigney replaced her as a pinch runner. On the pitch to
Pam Pence, Rigney scampered to second while knocking the ball away from the second baseman, giving her time to make it to third. Pence's infield shot brought Rigney around for the 6-5 LCU lead. The Lady Chaps did not allow the Zias to score in the seventh to conclude game one.
Hoppel (10-3) secured the win on 12 hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
ENMU struck first in the second game by scoring on a wild pitch in inning one before a center field home run by
Sammie Murrietta in the bottom of the frame tied the game at one-all.
Courtney McGee made her first appearance at the place and was greeted by being hit by a pitch and advanced to third following a
Faith Koria double to right field. A sacrifice fly ball by
Sydney Beuthien ended up being thrown towards the LCU dugout to push both runners home and put the Lady Chaps up 3-1.
The Zias inched closer with a score in the sixth, but LCU added a barrage of runs to blow open the game. Reed tallied her second home run of the afternoon on a two-run blast to left field for a 5-2 Lady Chap lead. Back-to-back hits by McGee and Hoppel set up an RBI single by Koria to score McGee, and a Beuthien double to right center brought home Koria and Hoppel to up the lead to 8-2. Murrietta added to the damage by singling down the left field line to score Beuthien and lengthen the lead to 9-2.
McGee (17-5) earned the win on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
