LUBBOCK, Texas (March 14, 2016) – No.10 Lubbock Christian University used a five-run seventh inning and a four-hit performance from
Tony Reyes to rally towards a 10-9 victory over Bemidji State University Monday at Hays Field.
LCU went into the seventh inning stretch trailing 8-5 and the Beavers turned the game over to their bullpen. Following back-to-back lead-off walks, Reyes hit an RBI-double down the left field line. Reyes' hit was the first of four consecutive base hits.
Brent Stewart,
Jesse Pintado and
JP Rousseau each singled before the Beavers would record their first out.
Jaime Bustamante closed out the scoring with a one-out single for a 10-8 lead.
Colin Eckman led off the eighth inning with a double for BSU and it led to a run to cut the LCU lead to 10-9. They would leave the tying run stranded in scoring position and LCU reliever
Glen Warrick shut the door in the ninth inning for his second save of the season.
It was LCU taking the first lead of the game with a three-run bottom of the first inning, started by
Brett Wilhelm's third homer of the season. BSU then went on a tear with seven straight runs. Scott Litchy homered in the second inning, Joey Hanowski tripled to lead off a two-run fourth inning and Litchy hit one of five Beaver hits in the fifth inning with a two-run double to highlight a four-run inning to complete the streak of seven straight runs. LCU came back from the 7-3 deficit with
Hunter McFall leading off the fifth inning with a triple followed by a two-run home run off the scoreboard by Reyes, cutting LCU's deficit to 7-5. The Beavers added a run in the top of the seventh for an 8-5 lead prior to the Chaps rally in the bottom frame.
Reyes was 4-for-5 with two runs and four RBI for LCU. LCU also had a pair of runs driven in by Pintado, a trio of hits from Rousseau (3-for-4) and a pair from
Brandon Rix (2-for-3). Hanowski led the Beavers with four hits (4-for-5) and they also had three hits (3-for-5) from Mason Bellew. Ryan Fransen went six innings for BSU but did not receive a decision. LCU starter Alberto Aveytia also went without a decision going 4.2 innings. LCU's
Collin Fraley went 3.1 innings in relief and claimed the win (1-0). Reliever Michael Herd suffered the loss for BSU (0-1).
LCU improved to 16-5 on the season and are 11-1 at home this season. Bemidji State, making their first appearance in Lubbock since 1972, fell to 2-11 on the year. LCU is 5-0 all-time against the Minnesota based program.
