AUSTIN, Texas (April 1, 2016) – Mother Nature's version of an April Fool's joke turned into reality, as rain showers turned a doubleheader into a single game, which resulted in a 5-2 win by No.6 St. Edward's over No. 15 Lubbock Christian Saturday at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
The Hilltoppers took the opening lead with the first four runs of the game. J.D. Arrowood and Joseph Olson each had an RBI-single in a two-run third inning, and a four-hit fourth inning led to a two-run inning for the 4-0 lead. LCU's
Brent Stewart led off the fifth inning with a double and would later score on a single by
Brandon Urquizo to get LCU on the scoreboard.
Hunter McFall cut the SEU lead to 4-2 later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to add to his conference-leading RBI total. SEU's Romeo Cortina hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to close the game's scoring.
Eric Hester claimed the win in relief (4-2), going five innings and allowing one run on six hits. He struck out seven batters. Starter Collin Sherrod went four innings and allowed one run off four hits in his shortest outing of the season.
Guillaume Blanchette took the mound for LCU and suffered his first loss of the season (7-1). His streak of consecutive complete games ended at three games, as he went 6.2 innings and allowed five runs (two earned) off nine hits.
McFall went 2-for-3 for LCU at the plate and was joined by
Tony Reyes and Urquizo, who also had two-hit performances for LCU going 2-for-4. Nate Turner led SEU going 2-for-3. LCU out-hit SEU 10-9 for their sixth consecutive game with at least 10 hits.
LCU falls to 20-9 with the loss and 6-4 in conference, while SEU improves to 24-7 overall and 8-2 in conference. The win was their eighth straight win. The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
