Lady Chaps Open With Win in Opening Day Split

GAME 1 INFORMATION (11:00 a.m.)
Score: Harding University 1, Lubbock Christian 3 (25-20, 26-28, 18-25, 16-25)

HIGHLIGHTS
 
LCU improves to 26-12 all-time in season openers 10-3 in season openers under the direction of Jennifer Lawrence, as they defeated Harding University 3-1 in the morning game before falling to the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce in four sets at the Hilton Garden Inn Classic Friday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Harding Game
 
Set One:
Down 14-19, the Lady Chaps scored six of the next eight points to make it 20-21 before the Lady Bison closed out the set scoring the final four points to take the first set 20-25. Emily Hanaway led the Lady Chaps with four attacks.
 
Set Two:
Harding jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Lady Chaps fought back to take a 11-8 lead. The Lady Bison climbed back on top and served set point at 24-21 when LCU scored four straight points to go ahead 25-24. The two teams continued to trade points until the Lady Chaps closed out the set to win 28-26. Ariel Froeschl led the way with four blocks and five kills.
 
Set Three:
LCU took the lead at 5-4 and never looked back on the way to a 25-18 victory. Mallory Powell had 10 assists, a block and two service aces to lead the way for the Lady Chaps.
 
Set Four:
The Lady Chaps jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the fourth and final set on the way to a 25-16 victory to take the set and the match. Kelsie French served 10 straight points while amassing three service aces in the set.
 
Inside The Numbers:
12 – Christiana Tavo had 12 kills for a second consecutive season opener. Her career high is 13.
44 – Mallory Powell produced 44 assists in the four-set match.

Texas A&M-Commerce Game
 
Set One:
The Lady Chaps fought to a 15-11 lead before the Lions managed to come back to take the first set 25-22. Newcomer Lauren Zoller led the way for LCU in the first set with four kills.
 
Set Two:
LCU fell behind 3-7 and climbed back into it to go up 20-12. The teams battled back-and-forth before the Lions closed out the set 28-30 to take the second set. The Lady Chaps were led in set two by Channing Castleberry who had six kills and served 10 straight points including a service ace.
 
Set Three:
TAMU-Commerce took the early lead but the two teams traded points throughout to find themselves tied at 23 each. The Lady Chaps fought to take the third set 27-25. Mallory Powell had nine assists in the third set to lead LCU.
 
Set Four:
The Lions got out to an early 10-2 lead and LCU failed to get any closer as the fell 25-19. Channing Castleberry, Ariel Froeschl and Christiana Tavo led the way with each having two kills for the Lady Chaps in the final set.
 
Inside The Numbers:
10 – Lauren Zoller had her first double-digit performance in kills with 10.
8 – There were eight lead changes in the third set.
 
 
UP NEXT
Lubbock Christian will conclude their play in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic tomorrow with a game against Colorado State-Pueblo at 9:00 a.m. and host Texas Woman's at 4:30 p.m.
