Highlights

Lubbock Christian University concluded their opening week of Heartland Conference play Saturday hosting Newman University. September is Leukemia Awareness Month and the Rip Griffin Center was filled with fans dressed in orange to help LCU spread leukemia awareness and honor the life of Nora Lyn Williams, the daughter of Casey and Kelsey Williams (Kelsey was a former four-year All-Conference member of the Lady Chaps). LCU finished the week 1-1, falling to University of Arkansas at Fort Smith in straight sets before dismantling Newman University in four sets. LCU nearly had four players with 10 kills, as Lauren Zoller's nine kills had her behind Emily Hanaway (14), Christiana Tavo (11), and Camille Porco (10).

How It Happened

Set One:
An early 5-0 run by the Newman Jets had the Lady Chaps down early. An onslaught of attacks by Christiana Tavo (four kills) and Emily Hanaway (three kills) brought LCU back to tie it up at 13 and forced Newman to call a timeout. Out of the huddle came a back and forth seesaw battle that saw six ties and four lead changes. Newman would end with the upper hand 28-26.

Set Two:
Undoubtedly motivated by the tough loss in the opening set, the Lady Chaps came out swinging with a 13-4 run headed by a pair of Zoller aces. The Jets made a late run, but the deficit proved to be too much. Porco had the final kill as LCU took the last four points to take the second set 25-14. Hanaway led LCU with four kills in the set.

Set Three:
The Lady Chaps jumped out to another early lead in the third set. Leading 11-5, Karley David served for eight straight points that placed the Jets in a hole down 18-5. Hanaway had six kills in the set and the Lady Chaps produced a .400 kill percentage (17 kills) in the set en route to a 25-12 victory.

Set Four:
Finding their rhythm early, the Lady Chaps started the fourth set with a 7-2 lead and would not look back. Leading 16-15, LCU was able to get breathing room with a 7-1 run. Newman was able to cut it to 23-21 before LCU tallied the final two points needed to  clinch the match with a 25-21 set win.

Inside the Numbers:
52 – LCU produced 52 Kills in the four-set match. Hanaway led the effort with 14 kills.
32 – Kelsie French led the team with 32 Digs.
3-2 – Once taking a 3-2 lead in the second set, LCU never trailed the rest of the game.

Up Next:
The Lady Chaps remain home Thursday hosting St. Mary's at 6:00pm in a Heartland Conference contest.
