Tavo's Career High Kills Mark Rallies Lady Chaps Past Rattlers

Double-Doubles By Hannaway and Powell Also Highlight Conference Win

Highlights
 
Lubbock Christian University won their second straight Heartland Conference contest, putting them above .500 in conference and overall, defeating StMU in thrilling fashion. LCU won the opening set, but then fell behind 2-1 before rallying with set wins in the final two sets to edge out the Rattlers. The Lady Chaps did it behind the play of Emily Hanaway and Christiana Tavo, who combined for 16 kills in the final two sets.
 
How It Happened
 
Set One:
A quick 6-2 start to the match helped the Lady Chaps eventually jump out to a 15-7 lead in the opening set. They led as much as 21-11 before claiming the set 25-18. LCU had four aces in the opening set, with three racked up by Hanaway.
 
Set Two:
It was the Rattlers with the quick start in the second set. They jumped out to a 10-5 lead The closest LCU would get is 20-17 before StMU pulled away with a 25-19 set win. LCU was plagued with only eight digs in the set, as StMU had a .400 attack percentage in the set with 19 kills. Tavo led all players in the set with six kills (no attack errors). 
 
Set Three:
The teams traded blows in the start of the third set. After surrendering the first four points of the set to the Lady Chaps, StMU scored seven straight points and took a 7-4 lead. A pair of kills by Camille Porco and Hanaway led a 7-2 LCU run and they regained the lead at 14-13. LCU would only produce two kills the rest of the way (each by Tavo) and StMU won the set 25-21. LCU had 25 digs during the set, as the two teams combined for 87 attack attempts and 45 digs in the set. Kelsie French had 12 digs for LCU in the set. Shelley Chapron produced six of her 17 kills in the set for StMU. She also had six blocks in the set (the team had 8.5 blocks).
 
Set Four:
Needing a set win, LCU jumped ahead early with leads of 11-6 and 17-9. They cruised to a 25-17 set win. Hanaway led LCU with five kills and six digs in the set.
 
Set Five:
Tavo had five kills in the decisive fifth set, with her third helping LCU take a 7-3 lead. StMU twice moved within two points of LCU (11-9, 14-12), but Tavo and Porco combined for a block to get match point and a 15-12 set win. The pair joined Ariel Froeschl with five blocks each in the set.
 
Inside the Numbers:
20 – Tavo set a career mark in kills with 20.
31 – The match marked the second straight 30 dig performance by French.
52 – Mallory Powell had a season high 52 assists, which was her highest total since producing 57 on Oct. 24, 2015 (vs. Newman).

The Lady Chaps remain home Saturday hosting Texas A&M International at noon in a Heartland Conference contest.
