Lubbock Christian University rallied back from a 2-0 match deficit to shock Arkansas – Fort Smith 3-2 Saturday afternoon inside Rip Griffin Center, which ended UAFS's 43-match win streak in Heartland Conference play. The last time UAFS had lost a conference match was on Oct. 9, 2014. The loss marks their first ever to LCU (12
th all-time meeting) and their 13
th (in 133 conference matches) all-time conference loss since joining the NCAA Div. II ranks in 2009. UAFS had won their prior 49 matches against Heartland Conference foes if conference matches and conference tournament postseason matches are combined. LCU completed the task behind a season-high 22 kills from
Channing Stewart. They also received 12 kills from
Lauren Zoller and 11 from
Jaiden Kennedy. UAFS received 18 kills from Anna Demmer and a double-double from Pulotu Manoa (10 kills and 10 digs). Autumn Reese (UAFS) had a match high 38 digs and LCU's
Brynn Warnack had a match high 46 assists. The win places LCU's conference home win streak to 10 matches and they have won four straight overall conference matches (4-3).
How It Happened
Set One:
UAFS took the opening set 25-10 thanks to a 16-3 run that turned a 5-4 UAFS lead into a 21-7 advantage. Anna Demmer produced five of UAFS's 15 kills in the set, as UAFS held a 15-7 advantage in kills. Susannah Kelley assisted on 13 of the UAFS kills and helped the Lions to a .400 attack percentage.
Set Two:
The Lions led by seven early (14-7) and as late as 18-11, before four straight attack errors led to a 5-0 LCU run, which was part of an 8-1 run to tie the set 19-19. The match was tied deep 21-21 before the Lions closed the set on a 4-1 run for a 25-22 set win.
Channing Stewart and
Lauren Zoller each had three kills to lead LCU in the set. Demmer and Pulotu Manoa co-led LCU with four kills in the set. Each team had a .162 attack percentage in the set.
Set Three:
There were a series of early lead changes, including LCU taking a 7-6 lead after a kill from
Leah Roberson. LCU never trailed after taking the 7-6 lead despite never getting the lead margin over three until a kill by
Jaiden Kennedy provided LCU a 17-13 advantage. UAFS pulled with two points of LCU (20-18) before the Lady Chaps closed the set on a 5-0 run. Stewart provided LCU six kills in the set, as LCU had a 19-7 advantage in kills in the set. Roberson also provided four kills in the set for the Lady Chaps. Reese had nine digs in the set and had 25 through three sets.
Set Four:
Despite UAFS opening the set on a 4-0 run, the score was tied on 11 occasions in the fourth set. There were a combined eight 2-0 runs in the set and outside a 12-8 LCU lead in the set, the match was never separated by more than three points. The score was tied 23-23 before Kennedy's kill and a Lions attack error clinched the set 25-23 and forced a decisive fifth set.
Set Five:
LCU and Stewart was nearly unstoppable in the fourth set, as Stewart racked up five kills in the set and the team produced a .471 attack percentage. Stewart's five kills came on eight attempts. LCU used a 5-0 run to take a 6-1 lead in the set and the run was part of a 9-2 outburst by LCU. Demmer tried to rally the Lions with four kills in the set.
Inside the Numbers:
1-11 – The win was LCU's first ever win over UAFS and they are 1-11 all-time against the Lions. LCU had never won more than one set in a match in the previous 11 meetings.
2-2 – LCU improved to 2-2 in five-set matches this season. Both wins in five-set matches have come with LCU opening the match trailing 2-0 (last was Sept. 9 vs. Eastern New Mexico).

Lauren Zoller posted her third consecutive match with a at least 10 kills (12 kills), which is a season high streak for the outside hitter.
19 – LCU posted 19 kills in the third set, which is a season high for kills in a set.
22 –
Channing Stewart produced 22 kills for her fourth consecutive match with at least 10 kills. She did not have a match in double figures in kills this season prior to the current four-match stretch.
67 – Stewart received 67 kill attempts in the match, which is the most in her LCU career and the most attempts by a Lady Chap since Kacey Deterding received 68 attempts on Nov. 7, 2013.
