OPENING WEEKEND
The Lady Chap softball team opens play Friday by hosting a three-day tournament that includes Colorado Christian, Northwestern Oklahoma State, Regis and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. The tournament will begin Friday at noon with teams playing at LCU's PlainsCapital Park and Lubbock Christian High School's softball field.
LOOKING BACK AT LAST SEASON
The Lady Chaps went 45-15 in 2016 and 19-5 in Heartland Conference action to finish second in the regular season before winning the Heartland Conference Tournament and advancing to the South Central Regional. LCU finished having seven players named to the All-Heartland Team (four first-team selections). One Lady Chaps was named to the All-Region team as well – Morgan Colburn.
KEY RETURNERS
Three of the seven Lady Chaps selected to the 2016 Heartland All-Conference team are back. Freshman shortstop, Lindzi Clemmer, and Senior pitchers Katera Eltsosie and Katlyn Holmes. Having two of the leading pitchers in the conference both returning is reassuring with all of the position players lost to graduation.
KEY LOSSES
Seven starters were lost to graduation – Ashton Bell, Katlin Reed, Molly Davison, Kelsey Hoppel, Liz Torres, Morgan Colburn and Sammie Murrietta. Losing seven starters takes with it the top five hitters from last season's team.
NEWCOMERS
The Lady Chaps add 14 new faces to their roster with seven incoming freshmen and seven transfers. Having to fill so many spots in the lineup is never fun. However, with so many promising transfers and incoming freshman the Lady Chaps look to pick right back up where they left off in May.
ABOUT REGIS
Regis, located in Denver, Colo., is picked to finish sixth in the RMAC after concluding 2016 with a fourth place finish and a 27-21 record and a 21-13 mark in conference play. The Rangers return 12 players, three of which have been named All-Conference selections in previous seasons. LCU is 3-0 against the Rangers, facing them for the first time in 2015.
ABOUT TEXAS-PERMIAN BASIN
LCU holds a 17-0 advantage in all-time meetings with the Falcons with their first ever meeting during the Lady Chaps' inaugural season (2008) taking both games of the double-header at PlainsCapital Park.
ABOUT NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE
LCU last played the Lady Rangers in April of 2012 sweeping the double-header of then Sooner Athletic Conference foe. All-time LCU leads the series 16-1 with NWOSU who has since made the jump to NCAA Div.-II just like the Lady Chaps.
