Chaps Sweep Road Doubleheader in Laredo To Extend Win Streak To Seven Games

LCU Takes Advantage of 11 TAMIU Errors

LAREDO, Texas (March 31, 2017) – No.14 Lubbock Christian University used the combination of 14 runs and a combined shutout from pitchers Ricky Contreras, Colton Blackford and Brennen Fowler for a 14-0 win in the opener, and then followed with a three-run eighth inning in the second game for a 6-4 win to complete a doubleheader sweep over Texas A&M International University at Haynes Field Friday afternoon in Heartland Conference action.

LCU used big-run innings in the opener, benefiting off seven TAMIU errors. The seven errors were the most by a Chaps opponent since McMurry committed eight on Apr. 20, 2010.

The Chaps jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a five-run second inning off three hits and three TAMIU miscues. Brandon Rix capitalized in the inning driving a ball to right field for a double to score a pair of the five runs. The Chaps produced another five-run inning in the fifth inning, with the Chaps producing five hits. Josh Narvaiz drove in a pair of runs to highlight the inning. LCU extended the lead to 14-0 in the sixth inning with a four-run sixth inning. Three of the runs in the inning scored on Brandon Urquizo's first home run of the season and the second of his career (77th career game).

Ricky Contreras improved to 5-0 on the season, as he went four innings and allowed two hits. Blackford (two innings) and Fowler (one inning) each allowed one hit in scoreless relief to complete LCUs third shutout of the season.  TAMIU's Devon Torres suffered the loss (1-6), as he allowed 10 runs (five earned) off nine hits in 4.2 innings.

Urquizo finished the game with a career high four RBI for the Chaps. Rix (2-for-5), Tony Reyes (2-for-4), Caleb Koedyker (2-for-4) and Narvaiz (2-for-3) each had multi-hit performances at the plate in the opener.

The second contest was scoreless until the Chaps produced a three-run fifth inning. Urquizo sacrificed Koedyker with a bunt, advancing him from first base to third base, and Narvaiz followed with a double to plate LCU's opening run of the game. A pair of TAMIU errors set up the additional runs in the inning.

TAMIU answered in the home half of the fifth inning with their first run of the day. William Mora produced the RBI on a two-out single to cut LCU's lead to 3-1. Four hits by the Dustdevils in the seventh inning led to the game tied 3-3. TAMIU had the lead run on base with one out, but the Chaps went to Reagan Lucia out of the bullpen and he retired the next two batters to keep the game tied.

LCU responded with a trio of runs in the eighth inning. LCU's first three batters reached base to set up a sacrifice fly RBI by Ryan Rogers. Chase Simmons and Koedyker each singled in a run to complete the Chaps scoring. Nick Hooper had trouble closing the door in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Chaps reliever allowed two hits in the ninth inning, but he was able to get a groundout to end the game with the tying run left stranded. Hooper registered his fifth save.

Daniel Crooks got the start on the hill for LCU. He allowed one run off seven hits in six innings. Nathan Dockery was credited with the win (1-0). Osvaldo Raya fell to 0-4 for TAMIU, allowing six runs off five hits in 7.1 innings.

Koedyker led LCU with a 2-for-4 plate appearance. Alexander Cabezas and William Mora each went 3-for-5 for TAMIU.

The two wins place LCU's win streak at seven games. Their record improves to 23-8 overall and 7-1 in the Heartland Conference. TAMIU falls to 6-20 overall and 1-10 in conference play. The two teams complete the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
