SAN ANTONIO, Texas (March 5, 2017) – No.22 Lubbock Christian University received at least one RBI from eight different Chaparrals and they completed a three-game series sweep on the road over St. Mary's with an 11-4 victory Sunday afternoon at Dickson Stadium. The completion of the non-conference series has LCU with a five-game win streak.
The runs were early and often for the Chaparrals, who received a two run double from
Ryan Rogers in the first inning to complete a three-run frame and LCU led 3-0. StMU was able to respond with a two runs in the bottom half of the first inning without swinging the bat before the chaps added seven straight runs for a 10-2 lead through the top half of the third inning. LCU had three hits leading to a four-run second inning, with two scoring on a
Brandon Rix single.
Brent Stewart and
Josh Narvaiz each doubled in the third inning to highlight a three-run third inning.
Jack Kaiser led StMU with two RBI and went 2-for-4 at the plate. His two hits came in a one-run third and fifth inning, and the 10-4 deficit would be as close as StMU would get. LCU closed the scoring in the ninth inning, with Chase Simmon's second hit of the game driving in a run.
Eight different Chaps had at least one hit and eight had at least one RBI.
Tony Reyes led LCU with three hits (3-for-5).
Jaime Bustamante (2-for-6), Rix (2-for-4), and Simmons (2-for-4) each joined Reyes with a multi-hit game. Rix and Rogers co-led LCU with two RBI.
The two teams combined for 11 pitchers, with StMU went through six pitchers.
Daniel Crooks started the committee of pitchers for LCU and went three innings.
Brent Bezio followed with a trio of innings and claimed the victory. Each allowed two hits of the Rattlers five hits on the day. Bezio (1-1) claimed the win. Quinton Smithwick only lasted 1.1 innings on the bump for StMU, allowing five runs off two hits. He fell to 0-2.
LCU improved to 13-6 with the win and are riding wins in five straight games. StMU fell to 6-10. The Chaps remain on the road Friday with their Heartland Conference opener at Oklahoma Christian in Oklahoma City, Okla.
