How It Happened
Set One:
The tightly played opening set featured the score tied nine times during the set, including as late as 19-19. Neither team had a lead larger than a three-point margin. LCU led 18-15, but saw their lead slip away after a 7-1 Newman run to go up 22-19. They kept their distance and won the set 25-23. Emily Harvey (six) and Megan Pedersen (five) combined to produce 11 kills during the set, and Anna Burton had 10 digs to help the Jets in the set. LCU had eight players with at least one kill in the set, but no player had more than two.
Set Two:
LCU called two timeouts within the opening 11 points of the second set, but LCU was unable to break the tempo of the Jets, who opened the set with a 16-2 lead. The best LCU could do was close the set on a 9-5 run, but Newman won the set big (25-14). Harvey led all players in the set with five kills. LCU's
Jaiden Kennedy led the Lady Chaps with three kills in the set.
Set Three:
Each team had their best attacking set in the third set, with Newman hitting .319 (18 kills) and LCU hitting .243. Newman had another hot start, jumping out 5-1, before LCU countered to cut their deficit to 6-5. A pair of kills by
Emily Hanaway during a 7-2 LCU run helped tie the set at 18-18. Despite also being tied 19-19 and trailing 23-22, LCU was unable to take the lead and Newman closed the set with a pair of kills by Harvey to win the set 25-22 and the match 2-0.
Inside the Numbers:
.632 – Pedersen's hitting percentage of .632 was the highest by an LCU opponent since Mariah Chapman had a .640 mark for College of the Ozarks against LCU on Aug. 24, 2012 in Oklahoma City.
1 – Coming off their best block performance of the season (11 blocks) last Saturday against Nebraska - Kearney, LCU has followed with their lowest two block performances of the season. Thursday at UAFS, LCU had four blocks and Saturday,
Channing Stewart had the team's only block.
4 –
Brynn Warnack combined for her fourth double-double of the season, which leads the team.
15 – Newman's Emily Harvey's 15 kills is the most by an LCU opponent in a three-set match this season and the most since Arkansas – Ft. Smith's Kennedi Coleman produced 18 on Sept. 22, 2016.
17-12 – LCU committed 17 attack errors and Newman committed 12. The 17 attack errors are the fewest by the Lady Chaps this season and the 12 by Newman are the lowest by an LCU opponent this season.
