The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals ended their longest losing streak since 2006 in grand fashion to close out the 2017 Chap Classic, coming back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 over Eastern New Mexico University. LCU had to overcome a 21-kill performance from ENMU's Sarah Tuioti-Mariner, who the Greyhounds went to 53 times on kill attempts. The Lady Chaps utilized
Cory Jo Martin (33) and
Brynn Warnack (20) at the setter position and they combined for 53 assists. They setup
Lauren Zoller 15 times and
Avery Moore a career high 16 times for kills. Martin's 33 assists marked a season high (career high is 43 from last season against Midwestern State). LCU went 1-3 in the Chap Classic.
How It Happened
Set One:
Eastern New Mexico never let go of the lead in the opening set. LCU called a timeout trailing 12-6 and responded scoring 13 of the next 21 points to tie the set 19-19. It included a trio of serving aces by
Brynn Warnack. Jasmine Gannon had three kills in the set for the Greyhounds, including the most important one to clinch the opening set 25-22. LCU received 13 assists in the set by Warnack, setting up
Avery Moore for five kills. ENMU had a .357 kill percentage in the set.
Set Two:
Most of the second set was tightly played with four lead changes taking place. Neither team had more than a three-point margin of a lead, leading up to a 16-16 tied set. From there, ENMU took advantage of some LCU frontline miscues and closed the set on a 9-2 run. For a second straight set, Gannon had the kill to clinch the set for ENMU, who claimed the set 25-18. Sarah Tuioti-Mariner led ENMU in the set with five kills, and did it off 11 attempts.
Set Three:
LCU jumped into the driver seat in the third set, jumping out to a 14-6 advantage. They had a 6-0 run in the opening sequence, with a trio of kills from
Lauren Zoller. Trialing 17-9, ENMU stormed back with a 6-0 run to cut the Lady Chaps lead to 17-15. The Greyhounds got as close as 19-18 before LCU closed out the set on a 6-1 run. LCU had 15 kills in the set (Zoller and Moore each with four) and produced a .371 hitting percentage. They also received 13 assists from
Cory Jo Martin and seven digs from
Kelsie French in the set.
Set Four:
ENMU took an early 2-0 lead, but it was LCU the rest of the set following an 8-2 run. The 'Hounds made things interesting, fighting back from a 13-8 deficit (pulled to 13-12) and a 20-16 deficit (pulled to 21-20) to get within a point of the Lady Chaps. Leading 23-22, LCU was able to get kills from Zoller and
Emily Hanaway to claim the set 25-22 and force a decisive fifth set. Zoller led LCU with five kills in the set, and teammate
Jaiden Kennedy posted four blocks. Tuioti-Mariner had five kills on the losing end for ENMU.
Set Five:
LCU opened the final set with a 4-1 lead. Hanaway produced a pair of kills early in the set and LCU led 8-4 at the changeover. They built the lead to 9-4 (
Maddie DeGuire ace) before ENMU crawled back with a 4-1 run to cut the LCU lead to 10-8. ENMU, with five kills in the set from Tuioti-Mariner, was within a points reach, trailing 12-11, 13-12 and 14-13, but
Avery Moore's team-leading 16
th kill clinched the set 15-13 and the match 3-2 to complete the comeback.
