Highlights

Lubbock Christian University rebounded from a 2-0 deficit Saturday to come back and defeat DBU 3-2 in Heartland Conference road play at Burg Center. Always difficult to beat a team for a third time in one season, LCU completed the task after dropping the first two sets and then never trailing the final three sets for their second five-set win of the season. The win improved LCU to 17-7 overall and 7-1 in Heartland Conference play. Freshman Bradi Marshall nearly had a triple-double, while producing 50 assists, 11 digs and eight aces. Her eight aces is the highest single-match total under 15th-year head coach Jennifer Lawrence and the highest since collegiate volleyball went to rally-scoring. Ashley Vanfleet posted a career high 19 kills in the match to lead LCU. They also received a double-double from Lauren Zoller, who had 13 kills and 10 assists. Defensively, Morgan Schwarz matched a season high in blocks (5) and Maddie DeGuire contributed a career high 21 digs. Emma Eakin led DBU in the loss with 18 kills.

How It Happened

Set One:
DBU opened the first set with a 7-3 advantage. Trailing 9-4, LCU received a pair of kills from Ashley Vanfleet leading to a 6-0 run for a 10-9 LCU lead. With the set tied 12-12, DBU went on a 4-0 run and led 16-12. The two teams traded points from there and DBU won the opening set 25-21. Vanfleet had seven kills in the set. Emma Eakin led DBU with five kills in the frame.

Set Two:
It was the Lady Chaps with the early lead in the second set, opening the set with a 5-2 advantage. Lauren Zoller had a kill to put the Lady Chaps up 17-11, but they were unable to hold the lead. The Patriots went on a 10-3 run and took a 22-20 lead. The Pats claimed a 25-22 win in the set, led by another five-kill set from Eakin. DBU produced 18 kills in the set. LCU had 14 kills, their single-set high in the match, with Vanfleet leading LCU with four.

Set Three:
LCU turned things around in the third set, opening the set on a 7-1 run. They closed the set on a 7-4 eun to win the set 25-15. Lauren Zoller led LCU with four kills, as the team had a .310 hitting mark in the set.

Set Four:
The fourth set was tightly played until LCU went on a 7-3 run started by a kill from Zoller. The Lady Chaps closed the set on a 10-3 run to win the set 25-15 and force a decisive fifth set. Maddie DeGuire had eight digs in the set and LCU produce 3.0 team blocks, holding the Patriots to a -.023 attack percentage.

Set Five:
LCU completed their comeback with Bradi Marshall in the spotlight. Marshall had aces on three consecutive serves to put LCU up 5-0 to start the set. The closest DBU cut into LCU's lead in the set was 8-5. The Lady Chaps closed the match with a 3-0 run, capped by Marshall's fourth ace of the set to win the set 15-9. Vanfleet completed her career-high kill performance with four kills in the final set.

Inside the Numbers:
2-1 – The Lady Chaps improved to 2-1 this season in five-set matches. The last time LCU rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to win a match 3-2 was on Oct. 21, 2017 at home against Arkansas – Fort Smith, and the last time LCU completed the task on the road was Sept. 28, 2012 at Oklahoma City.

7-1 – LCU maintained a one-match lead in the Heartland Conference standings with the win (St. Mary's is 6-2). LCU's conference record of 7-1 is their best eight-match start in Heartland Conference play since a 7-1 record through eight matches to begin their 2014 Heartland Conference schedule (they went 9-1 through the first 10 games of conference play in 2014).

35-4 – LCU completes the regular season series over DBU and improves to 35-4 all-time over DBU. The Lady Chaps have now won seven of the previous eight contests.

.063 – DBU hit .301 over the first two sets, but combined to hit .063 over the final two sets.

2 – LCU won despite losing the head-to-head statistic in kills (59-58), digs (71-66) and assists (57-55). It is the second time they have won despite losing the head-to-head statistic in those categories in the same match (win over Emporia State on Aug. 24 was the prior time).

8 – LCU produced eight blocks in the match, with Morgan Schwarz matching a career high with five blocks (two solo). It is the ninth time this season LCU has had at least 8.0 blocks in a match (LCU had nine matches with at least 8.0 blocks all of last season).

8 – Bradi Marshall had eight aces, marking the most by a Lady Chap in the 15 years Jennifer Lawrence has served as head coach. Since 2006, the prior single-match high for a Lady Chaps member in aces was six (done twice this season by DeGuire). The mark matches the highest total in a five-set match in NCAA Division II play this season and ties as the 10th highest single-match total in Heartland Conference history.

4 – LCU produced four solo blocks in the match, which is their second highest total this season behind a mark of six on Sept. 13. That match was also against DBU and played at Burg Center.

+9 – LCU had a +9 advantage (10-1) in aces in the match. The margin against the opposition is their highest since a +11 (11-0) on Sept. 16, 2011 against Huston-Tillotson.

10 – LCU served up 10 aces in the match, which marks the fourth time this season LCU has had at least 10 aces served in a match.

11 – Bradi Marshall's double-double was her team-leading 11th double-double this season. She has double-doubles in six of LCU's eight conference matches this season.

Up Next:
LCU's four-match road trip has ended and the Lady Chaps return home Thursday to host Texas A&M International inside Rip Griffin Center.
