National Taco Day and Lubbock Christian University's Heartland Conference home opener went together like a perfect crunch Thursday night inside Rip Griffin Center. Fans were not only treated to free tacos, but they witnessed the Lady Chaparrals extending their win streak to eight matches with a straight set (3-0) Heartland Conference victory over DBU (Dallas Baptist University). LCU produced 36 kills in the win, with
Lauren Zoller and
Ashley Vanfleet each co-leading the squad with eight kills. They also had seven kills and four blocks from
Jaiden Kennedy.
Bradi Marshall supplied her team-leading seventh double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs in the win.
Kelsie French made news as well by moving into third place on the Heartland Conference's career digs list (2,332) with a match-high 21 Thursday night. DBU was led by Kasey Holand and Emma Eakin, who each had eight kills. The Patriots were held to a .050 attack percentage in the match.
How It Happened
Set One:
Lauren Zoller had a pair of kills and assisted on a block in the opening 10 points of the match, as LCU led 7-3. Emma Eakin responded with consecutive kills for the Patriots, who eventually cut LCU's lead to 12-10. LCU's second 7-3 run in the match extended their lead to 19-12 before claiming the set 25-19.
Avery Moore,
Jaiden Kennedy and
Leah Roberson each co-led LCU with a trio of kills in the set. Kennedy also provided an ace and an assisted block for 4.5 points in the set. Kasey Holand had a match-high four kills for DBU.
Bradi Marshall assisted on 12 of LCU's 14 kills during the set.
Set Two:
LCU jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the set, with Zoller having another quick start (two kills in the first four LCU points), but DBU rallied back. Eakin led DBU in the set with four kills and three came during an 11-6 rally to tie the set 16-16.
Ashley Vanfleet made sure LCU never trailed by producing an ensuing kill, which started a 5-1 LCU run. The Lady Chaps won the set 25-21. They produced a .306 attack percentage in the set, and Zoller led LCU in the set with five kills. She also produced five digs in the set.
Set Three:
DBU was held to five kills on 31 attempts in the final set, leading to a -.161 attack mark. Meanwhile, Vanfleet was leading the way for LCU in the set with three kills. LCU made short work of the Patriots in the final set with a 10-1 run to open the set. DBU could only cut the deficit to seven (11-4) before LCU pulled away to win the set 25-9.
Inside the Numbers:
.050 – LCU held DBU to a .050 attack mark, marking the second consecutive game in which the Lady Chaps have held their opponent to under a .100 attack mark (sixth time this season). It is the second time this season LCU has completed the task in multiple games (the prior time also involved a match against DBU).
7 – The double-double for
Bradi Marshall (34 assists, 10 digs) was her team-leading seventh of the season and she has double-doubles in three consecutive matches.
8 – The win marked LCU's eighth straight victory, which is their longest since they won 11 straight in September of 2011.They have won 24 of 25 sets played during the stretch.
8.0 – For the third time this season, LCU produced at least 8.0 blocks in a three-set match, as they completed the task with 8.0 blocks Thursday.

11.0 – Kennedy led LCU with 11.0 points, marking the third time this season she has led the team in points in a match. Her season high is 12.0 (Aug. 25 at West Texas A&M). Kennedy had seven kills on 14 chances for a .500 attack percentage.

Kelsie French had 21 digs and moved past Victorria Martinez (2,317 digs with St. Mary's, 2011-14) and Cameron Hartson (2,317 digs with DBU, 2010-13) to third all-time in the Heartland Conference with 2,332 career digs. She needs 22 to move past Hayley Geer (2,353, 2003-06) and into second all-time in the LCU program history.
34 – LCU improved to 34-4 all-time against DBU and they have now won meetings against the Patriots this season. The two teams will meet again Oct. 20 in Dallas.
