How It Happened
Set One:
It was a wild opening set, with the two teams combining for 60 points. Twice it appeared LCU would cruise in the set, as they had leads of 7-0 and 16-10, but SEU went on a 14-7 run and served with set-point at 24-23. SEU would have three set-point serves, but LCU fought off each one. The Lady Chaps finally claimed the set on their third set-point serve with an ace by
Lauren Zoller. The ace was one of three in the set for the conference's leading team in the category.
Lauren Zoller led LCU with six kills in the set. SEU's Katarina Mendez had a match-high seven kills in the set, and they also received 10 digs from Morgan Beckham.
Set Two:
SEU seeked revenge in the second set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead and using a 10-3 run to take a 16-10 lead. LCU returned the favor from the opening set and rallied back from a 16-10 deficit with a 10-2 run to take a 20-18 lead. Seven of the points in the LCU run were due to SEU attack errors (four by blocks and
Jaiden Kennedy had four blocks in the rally). Five of the last six combined points in the match were off attack errors and LCU claimed the set 25-23. Teams combined for sub-par 21 kills in the set (11 by SEU), as they combined for 12 attack errors (10 blocks). The Lady Chaps were able to win the set despite a -.018 attack percentage in the set. Zoller led all players in the set with five kills.
Set Three:
SEU had a marginal lead early in the set and led 11-8 before LCU went on a 9-2 scoring stretch for a 17-13 advantage. SEU was able to cut their deficit to one on three occasions, but LCU held their lead and closed the set with a kill by Kennedy and Zoller to win the set 25-22 and clinch the match.
