Mother Nature Pushes Back Start of Cactus Classic

The Lady Chaps are headed for Tucson for the Cactus Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. (February 16, 2018) – The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaps softball team will travel to Tucson, Arizona this weekend to take part in the 3rd Annual D2 Cactus Classic at Lincoln Park hosted by the Tucson Invitational Games. Due to heavy rainfall in Tucson on Thursday all game times have been pushed back to give field crews time to get the playing surface ready. The Lady Chaps are scheduled to play two games on Friday against Azusa Pacific and California Baptist. LCU then plays two games on Saturday against Biola and No. 9 Dixie State before wrapping up play with a single game on Sunday versus Southern Nazarene.

AHEAD OF THE CLASS
Newcomer Megan Darling leads the team in batting average (.583) and walks (6). Courtney Medina leads the Lady Chaps in stolen bases with four. Morgan Dufour leads the LCU in home runs (6), slugging percentage (1.526), total bases (29) and runs-batted-in (12). Monique Francois leads the team in wins (3), strikeouts (23) and innings pitched (21). Clarissa Martinez leads the Lady Chaps with a 0.75 earned-run-average with 9.1 innings of play.

LAST GAME RECAP
MESQUITE, Texas (February 9, 2018) – The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals opened the North Texas Bash with a 14-6 victory over Texas A&M – Kingsville Friday.
 
LCU (5-1) got on the board first when pinch hitter Haley Hardison drove in Adelae Vayas in the second inning. The Javelinas (3-3) responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own. In the third inning, the Lady Chaps added two more runs off a two-run bomb hit by Morgan Dufour. Once again, TAMUK responded scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning off a Lauren Oatmen two-run home run to tie the score at 3-3.
 
The Lady Chaps put up four runs in the fourth inning with the first run coming off a Megan Darling single, which plated Casey Ingram. An error by the Javelina shortstop allowed Averi Miller to score and Dufour followed with her second two-run home run of the game. Lubbock Christian added three more runs in the fifth inning. Courtney Medina doubled to bring in Sara Ralston and K'leigh Arredondo before Sydney Beuthien drove in Medina to put the Lady Chaps up 10-3.
 
Texas A&M – Kingsville managed to get two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning (10-5) before the Lady Chaps plated another run in the sixth inning off a Miller single to score Ralston. The Javelinas answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 11-6. In the seventh inning, LCU plated another three runs, with all scoring off home runs. Lindzi Clemmer hit a two-run shot followed by one from Ralston.
 
Monique Francois (3-0) got the start for the Lady Chaps going the distance to notch her third victory of 2018. Mo allowed five earned runs off eight hits striking out nine TAMUK batters. Breanna Smith (2-1) started for the Javelinas lasting 3.2 innings. She gave up seven runs off seven hits, while walking four batters to suffer her first loss of the season. Carla Torres pitched an inning of relief for Texas A&M – Kingsville, allowing three runs off four hits before giving way to Chasity Morales, who threw the final 2.1 innings. She allowed four runs on five hits and walked three Lady Chaps.
 
AZUSA PACIFIC
The Lady Chaps have never faced Azusa Pacific. The cougars have started the season going 2-3 in the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas, NV. APU is led at the plate by Cayla Broussard who is hitting .471 with eight hits. Erinn Jaramillo leads the team in home runs (2), runs batted in (8) and slugging percentage (.750). In the circle Kay Ung tops the Cougars with one victory, a 2.55 earned run average and 10 strikeouts. Azusa Pacific comes into Tucson having lost their last game 10-11 to UC San Diego.
 
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
The two teams met once on the diamond in the Lady Chaps inaugural season (2008) with LCU winning 5-3 over the No.1 ranked team in the country at the time. The two teams faced-off in Tucson, Arizona at the Tucson Invitational Games. The Lancers are off to a 5-3 start to the 2018 season. Cheyann Tucker leads the team with a .389 batting average and seven hits. Ciara Stapp has two wins and a 2.10 earned run average to lead CBU. The Lancers are coming off a 7-5 loss to #8 Colorado Mesa.
 
BIOLA
Lubbock Christian and Biola have never faced each other in softball action. The Eagles are off to a 3-2 start this year. Areana Ramos leads BU with a .533 batting average, eight hits, six runs batted in and a .800 slugging percentage. Paige Austin leads the Eagles with two wins, 22 strikeouts and 17 innings pitched. Terri Van Dagens leads the team with a 1.83 earned run average. The eagles come into the Cactus Classic having lost their last game 9-4 to William Jessup.
 
DIXIE STATE
LCU holds the all-time advantage 1-0 over the Trailblazers beating them 2-1 last year in the Cactus Classic. No. 9 ranked Dixie State has started the season 8-0. They enter Tucson coming off a 10-9 victory of Colorado School of Mines, which lasted nine innings. DSU is led by Jessica Gonzales with a .550 batting average, 16 runs batted in, four home runs and a 1.200 slugging percentage. Janessa Bassett is right on her heels hitting .500 with 13 runs batted in, five home runs and a 1.333 slugging percentage. In the circle the Trailblazers are led by Cambrie Hazel who is 4-0 with a 1.83 earned run average to go with 15.1 innings pitched and 17 strikeouts.
 
SOUTHERN NAZARENE
The Lady Chaps and the Storm were conference foes in the NAIA Sooner Athletic Conference from 2008-2012. The two teams faced each other 12 times with LCU holding the all-time advantage winning 11 of those meetings with the Lady Chaps taking the last meeting in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City May 5, 2012. SNU is 1-3 to open the season. They are led by Riley Brown hitting .667 with 3 runs batted in and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Shekinah Gilliam has one win to lead the team. Mahina Sauer leads the team in earned run average (3.50) to go with her six strikeouts. The Storm are coming off a 5-1 loss to Washburn.
