OPENING WEEKEND
The Lady Chap softball team opens play Friday by hosting a three-day tournament that includes Chadron State, Colorado School of Mines, Emporia State, Midwestern State and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. The tournament will begin Friday at 11:00 a.m. The teams will play at LCU's PlainsCapital Park, Lubbock Christian High School's softball field and Frenship High School's softball field.
LOOKING BACK AT LAST SEASON
The Lady Chaps went 40-19 in 2017 and 14-7 in Heartland Conference action to finish second in the regular season before winning the Heartland Conference Tournament and advancing to the South Central Regional for a second consecutive year. LCU finished having six players named to the All-Heartland Team (five first-team selections).
Katera Eltsosie was named to the D2CCA All-Region team and
Sydney Beuthien was named a Fastpitch News All-American.
KEY RETURNERS
Four of the six Lady Chaps selected to the 2017 Heartland All-Conference team are back. Senior All-American
Sydney Beuthien and senior centerfielder
Courtney Medina return along with junior second baseman
Lindzi Clemmer and sophomore pitcher
Monique Francois.
KEY LOSSES
Four starters were lost to graduation –
Addison Ard,
Roxy Curiel,
Katera Eltsosie and
Katlyn Holmes. Of those loses are two starting pitchers and the starting catcher from last season's team.
NEWCOMERS
The Lady Chaps add 7 new faces to their roster, two of which redshirted last season. Only two incoming freshmen on the 2018 squad. Having to fill so many important roles in the lineup is never fun, but the Lady Chaps look to pick right back up where they left off in May with their sights set on a third consecutive Heartland title.
ABOUT CHADRON STATE
The Eagles finished their 2017 campaign 32-25 and return power in outfielder Aspen Eubanks as well as a remarkable pitcher in Jessica Jarecki.
ABOUT COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES
The Orediggers are picked to finish second in the RMAC in the preseason poll and return two All-Region players, second baseman Katie Leiker and pitcher Hallie Smith.
ABOUT EMPORIA STATE
The Hornets finished second in their conference in 2017 with a 34-26 overall record. Emporia State boasts much speed with over 90 stolen bases last season.
ABOUT MIDWESTERN STATE
LCU last played the Mustangs on January 30, 2016 winning that game 7-2. All-time MSU leads the series 2-1. The Mustangs return eight starters from their 2017 squad including a sophomore All-Lone Star Conference outfielder, Lauren Lindgren.
ABOUT TEXAS - PERMIAN BASIN
LCU holds a 20-0 advantage in all-time meetings with the Falcons with their first ever matchup happening in the Lady Chaps' inaugural season in 2008 with LCU sweeping the double-header.
