LCU Lets Lead Slip in Opener, But Bounces Back With Win

Highlights
 
Lubbock Christian University opened their play at the Westminster Invitational with a split, falling 3-2 to Minnesota State University before bouncing back for a 3-0 win over the host Westminster College. The Lady Chaps had a 2-0 lead lead against MSU, before they went on a tear and won the final three sets. Against Westminster, LCU picked up their first straight-set win of the season.
 
How It Happened
 
Minnesota State Match
 
Set One:
The opening set contained all three and the only three lead changes of the match. Utah native Ashley Vanfleet had a nice opening to her visit back home with four kills in the opening set. LCU closed the set on an 8-4 run for a 25-18 set win despite a combo of 10 kills (five each) from Alvia Garbe and Morgan Olson.
 
Set Two:
LCU never trailed in the second set, benefiting off a pair of Bradi Marshall aces to go on a 7-2 run. They had a match high 13 kills in the set and won 25-22. Lauren Zoller and Avery Moore each had three kills in the set to co-lead LCU.
 
Set Three:
The tide turned in the third set, with LCU committing eight attack errors and being limited to one kill. MSU used a 15-4 run to close the set with a 25-12 win.  
 
Set Four:
Olson stood out for MSU in the fourth set with seven kills. Lauren Zoller tried to counter with four kills and LCU's 5-0 run late in the set was not enough, as MSU won the set 25-20.
 
Set Five:
MSU continued their momentum in the final set, opening on a 6-1 run. Olson produced four more kills to complete a 21-kill match and they claimed the set 15-6.
 
Inside the Numbers:
4 – Bradi Marshall produced four aces for LCU.
10 – Lauren Zoller was the only LCU player with double figures in kills (10).
11 – MSU produced 11 blocks, with nine by Anissa Janzig.
27 – MSU had 27 points decided on serves , as they had 12 aces and 15 serving errors. Lauren Lowry had five aces.
 
 
Westminster Game
 
Set One:
Six different players had kills in the opening set, with Moore and Vanfleet co-leading the team with three each. Zoller also added contribution with two aces and five digs, as LCU claimed the first set 25-19.
 
Set Two:
LCU went to task offensively in the second set with a .357 attack percentage. The Lady Chaps had 18 kills in the set, with Jaiden Kennedy (6) and Zoller (5) combining for 11 kills. Three of LCU's first seven points stemmed from kills by Zoller, which allowed LCU to open the set with an 8-3 advantage. They were able to pace their way the rest of the match for a 25-20 set win.    
 
Set Three:
Vanfleet had the hot hand early in the third set and had a pair of kills to help LCU jump out 9-3. The Griffins rallied and eventually tied the set at 14-14. A 6-4 advantage over the following 10 points allowed LCU to keep their distance with a 25-22 set win to sweep the match. Zoller (6) and Vanfleet (4) combined for 10 of LCU's 18 kills in the set.
 
Inside the Numbers:
 
Double-Doubles – Laren Zoller (13 digs, 11 kills) had double-doubles for LCU. She has double-doubles in LCU's two road games (non-neutral site) this season.
.275 – LCU had a .275 kill percentage with 48 kills, averaging 16 per set.
10 – Ashley Vanfleet notched 10 kills.
21 – Kelsie French had 21 kills, with a pace of seven per set. She posted 11 in the final set.

LCU closes their stay in Utah Saturday facing Fort Lewis (10:30 a.m. CT) and Truman State (6 p.m.).
