Southwestern Oklahoma State continued their best start in program history with a straight-set victory (3-0) over Lubbock Christian University Thursday to ruin their home opener inside Rip Griffin Center. The loss marks the second consecutive season in which LCU fell in their home opener, marking the first time LCU has lost consecutive home openers inside Rip Griffin Center. Despite the loss, they received a match-high 17 kills from
Lauren Zoller.
Set One:
The opening set was a back and forth set featuring seven lead changes and the score tied on 12 occasions. The last tied score came at 20-20 after a kill from
Avery Moore for LCU. SWOSU led 23-22 and 24-23, using a sixth kill in the set by Danusia Sipa Borgeau to win the set 25-23. LCU fell in the set despite 19 kills in the set (six by Zoller and
Ashley Vanfleet). Blocks helped the Bulldogs prevail in the set, with 5.0 total (Elizabeth McVicker and Jenny Tackett each had three block assists in the set.
Set Two:
LCU had a nice start to the second set, leading 2-0, before SWOSU went on a 9-2 run. It was part of a 15-5 run and the Lady Chaps were unable to recover. Zoller led all players in the set with five kills.
Set Three:
Southwestern Oklahoma State called a timeout with LCU leading 16-12 and it paid off for SWOSU. They went on an 8-1 run and led 20-17. They closed the set on a 13-4 run to win the set 25-20. Zoller closed out her night with six kills in the set.
Inside the Numbers:
0 – LCU entered the match leading the Heartland Conference in aces, but they were unable to record an ace in the game. LCU had two matches last season in which they were unable to garner an ace.
17 – Zoller's 17 kills matches a season high and comes two kills shy of her career high of 19 from a 2016 match against St. Edward's.
