AUSTIN, Texas (October 28, 2019) –
Maddi Chitsey posted 22 points and Lubbock Christian University out-shot the University of Texas from the field, but it was a 10-0 start to the game for the Longhorns, which propelled them to an 83-73 exhibition win over the Lady Chaparrals Monday night inside Frank Erwin Center.
The Longhorns were shooting lights out in the opening two minutes, opening the game on a 10-0 run. Texas made five of their first six shot attempts, draining their first three three-point attempts. Meanwhile, LCU opened the game missing their first four attempts and Chitsey's field goal with 7:48 remaining in the opening quarter ended the Longhorns 10-0 run.
LCU trailed 27-17 at the end of the first quarter. The deficit slipped to an 18-point deficit after Joanne Allen-Taylor's three-pointer 1:34 into the second quarter put Texas ahead 35-17.
Ashton Duncan drained a three-pointer for the Lady Chaps to help LCU close the half on a 6-0 run and cut the deficit to 46-34 at the halftime break. Chitsey led LCU at the half with 10 points, with a 3-of-4 shooting mark inside the arc in the half. Allen-Taylor led Texas with 12 points in the first half.
The two teams traded off scoring in the third quarter until late in the quarter, as
Madelyn Turner, who had 16 points in the second half, hit a three-pointer to cap a 5-0 LCU run to cut the UT lead to 62-54. LCU trailed 65-56 heading in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Chaps opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run, which was part of a 12-3 scoring surge. Turner was 4-of-4 in the second half from three-point range and capped the scoring run with a three-pointer to cut Texas' lead to 65-61 less than a minute into the fourth quarter. The three-pointer by Turner forced Texas to call a timeout.
The timeout proved vital for the Longhorns, as LCU went a five-minute span without a field goal on 0-of-5 shooting from the field. Texas scored their next seven points from the free-throw line (12 of Texas' 18 points in the final quarter were from the free-throw line) and built the lead back up to 15 (76-61). LCU fought back, getting another three-pointer from Turner to get within single digits (82-73 with 43 seconds left), but it would be as close as LCU would get.
LCU out-shot Texas from the field 42.4% (25/59) – 40% (26/65) and from long range (37.5% to 36.4%). The Lady Chaps had a 9-8 edge in three-pointers. Texas out-scored LCU 60-59 from the field and the teams were even in scoring (73-73) following LCU's 10-0 run to start the game.
Chitsey's team-leading 22 points came off an 8-of-15 shooting performance. Turner finished with 18 points and was 6-of-8 from the field in the second half. Texas was led by Allen-Taylor, who posted a game-high 24 points. Texas was 24-of-27 (85.2%) from the free-throw line.
The game was each team's first exhibition game of the season. LCU The Lady Chaps are now 4-3 all-time in games against NCAA Div. I programs. Their trio of exhibition games against NCAA Division I power conference programs continues Wednesday in Waco, as they will face defending national champion Baylor at 7 p.m. inside Ferrell Center.
OF NOTE…
LCU played nine players and all nine contributed with at least two points.
