Chaps Suffer Close Loss in Season Opener

Three LCU Players Finish in Double Figures

GOLDEN, Colo. (November 8, 2019) – Lubbock Christian's men's basketball led as late as the 3:57 mark and was tied with Regis with just over a minute to go but fell just short in their season-opener Friday night, losing 64-60 to the Rangers.

The Chaps missed their first two shots and got down 4-0 early, but bounced back quickly with a three-pointer from Lloyd Daniels and back-to-back buckets from Kobe Thompson to go up 6-0. Rashaan Proctor got his first basket of the season after the media timeout as LCU continued to stay in front of Regis through most of the first half. The biggest Chap lead was just three points, however, and came at the 6:44 mark.

Regis eventually got back on top with a layup at the 5:28 mark, but Lubbock Christian remained with in striking distance. Parker Hicks hit a pair of free throws with 2:45 to go in the first half that put LCU up by two, but the Rangers hit two three-pointers and kept the Chaps scoreless to close out the half with a four-point lead.

Both teams shot an identical 12-28 (42.9%) from the field in the first 20 minutes of play, but five of Regis's made baskets were from behind the arc compared to just one made three-pointer for the Chaps.

The Rangers hit another two three-pointers to open the second half, stretching their lead to its widest margin of eight points with 17:36 left to play. Proctor stopped the Regis run with a layup and a pair of free throws. LCU continued to slowly chip away at the Ranger lead with a jumper from Silas Crisler and a layup from Cameron Copley, but were unable to completely close the gap and tie the game or take the lead.

A basket in the paint from Daniels with 6:25 left brought the Chaparrals within one, and Copley found Proctor on a fast break for a dunk with 3:57 to go that finally gave LCU a lead.

Regis responded once again, following the dunk with a three-pointer of their own to go back in front. Lubbock Christian tied the game one final time on a three-pointer from Hicks with 1:17 to play, but the Rangers scored the next five points to rebuild a lead and close out the win, 60-64.

TURNING POINT
The Chaps were down three when Hicks pulled up from the left wing and drilled a three-pointer, tying the game with just over a minute to go. Toni Rocak hit a layup for the Rangers the next time down the floor and then hit a three-pointer after the Rangers forced a Chap turnover, which put the game out of reach.
