Road Play Closes Out With Loss To End Win Streak

Ashley Vanfleet Records 16 Kills, as Five-Match Win Streak Ends

Highlights
Lubbock Christian University had their five-match win streak come to an end Saturday, falling in straight sets to St. Edward's University. The match was LCU's final regular season road game of the season. SEU had a 45-31 advantage in kills, with Camille Dedeaux and Katarina Mendez each had 12 kills in the match. Mendez had a .500 hitting percentage and Dedeaux was at a .435 hitting mark. Ashley Vanfleet led LCU with 16 kills. LCU's Maddie DeGuire led all players with 18 digs.

How It Happened

Set One:
Karley David-McLeroy produced a kill to move a point back of the Hilltoppers, who led 11-10, but then the 'Toppers went on a 14-4 run to close the set for a 25-14 win. The run included a 12-2 stretch by SEU, who received four kills from Katarina Mendoza. The Hilltoppers had a 14-7 advantage in kills in the set. Five of LCU's seven kills in the set were produced by Ashley Vanfleet.

Set Two:
The Hilltoppers opened the set with a 7-2 lead. LCU slowly cut into the deficit, trailing 10-8, 15-14 and 16-15. The Lady Chaps were unable to take the lead, tying the match up at 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22. A kill by Mendez set up a two-point edge and SEU won the set 25-23. The teams combined for 31 kills in the set, with 17 produced by SEU. Vanfleet and Mendez each lead their team with eight kills in the set.

Set Three:
The final set had a tight start, with the match tied 7-7 before SEU exploded with a 7-0 run for a 14-7 lead. They built the lead to 19-11 and put the match away with a 4-1 run to end the set for a 25-17 set win. Dedeaux led all players in the set with seven kills. Morgan Schwarz and Vanfleet each had three kills in the set for LCU.

Inside the Numbers:
0 – For the first time this season, LCU was without an ace in a match. It marks the first time LCU went without a serving ace since Sept. 6, 2018 (vs. Southwestern Okla. St.).
3 – SEU has won three straight matches against LCU for the first time since 1997. They are 8-14 all-time against LCU. Three of the past four meetings in the series have resulted in 3-0 decisions.
16 – Ashley Vanfleet led LCU with 16 kills, marking the fifth time this season she has produced at least 16 kills in a match.
3-7 – LCU closes their road schedule in regular season play with a 3-7 record.

Up Next:
LCU has two matches remaining in the regular season. They return home Friday to host Dallas Baptist and then will follow with Senior Day scheduled Saturday, as LCU hosts Tarleton State.
