SAN ANGELO, Texas (Feb. 15, 2019) – Lubbock Christian University earned its first road win against Angelo State in more than five years Friday night, using strong starting pitching performance from
Nathan Dockery and a pair of home runs to earn their fourth straight win.
LCU last earned a win at Foster Field on Feb. 7, 2013 (16-7), when Friday night's starter
Nathan Dockery was still a senior in high school. Dockery set the tone for 2018's sixth win, though, as he made his first-ever start in a Chap uniform. The Amarillo did his job, setting a new career high in innings pitched with seven, while striking out a new career high of seven batters as well. He scattered five hits and allowed just one run while he was on the mound.
Dockery was given an early lead by his offensive teammates, thanks to right fielder
Hill Alexander. After the Chaps went down in order, Alexander came to the plate to lead off in the top of the second. He quickly smashed a pitch to left field for his second homer of the year, giving the Chaps a lead they would never relinquish.
LCU added another two runs in the third inning with three two-out hits. Left fielder
Chase Whetsel started the two-out rally, singling and advancing all the way to third on an error in the outfield. He came around to score on a wild pitch.
Keaton Greenwalt then singled and also advanced to third on an error, this time by the Angelo State pitcher. He came in to score when
Andrew Pratt singled to drive in his ninth RBI of the year.
The Rams got a run back in the bottom of the third, but the Chaps responded and some in the top of the fourth with their last three runs.
James Hardberger led off the inning with a triple. It was the seventh of the season for LCU overall, but the first of Hardberger's career.
Ryan Rijo followed with a walk, bringing up Bradey Hayward, who had already made an impact on the game with an over-the-shoulder catch in foul territory in the second inning. Hayward made an even bigger impact with his bat, smashing a three-run homer to left field that put the Chaps up by five runs.
Dockery continued to dominate on the mound through the seventh inning before he was relieved in the eight by
Reagan Lucia. Lucia closed out the win two strong innings, giving up just one two-out run in the ninth before inducing a flyout to seal the Chap victory.
Lubbock Christian will be back at Foster Field at 2 p.m., looking for its first series win on the road against Angelo State since 2013.
