LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (4-0) at
CONCORDIA (2-2)
September 20, 2019
Portland, Oregon

CHAPARRAL HEADERS
• With a pair of wins last weekend LCU has started the season 4-0 for the first time in program history. It exceeds their previous best starts of 3-0-1 in 2010 and 2011

• LCU sophomore forward Fernando Flores was name the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week on September 17 after scoring four goals in two games last weekend

• Chaps were ranked fifth in this week's United Soccer Coaches South Central Regional Poll. They moved up five spots after a No. 10 ranking in the previous regional poll

• Flores's three game-winning goals through the first four games are tied for the most in all of NCAA Division II. Only Le Moyne's Robert Rohrhirshce also has three

• LCU is one of 26 undefeated Division II men's soccer teams left in the country. Only one of those 26 teams - Lake Erie - has five wins so far this season

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
LCU is on the road for a pair of games for the second straight week, winning their first two road contests against Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma Baptist. The Chaps are coming off a 2018 season that saw them above the .500 mark in road contests, going 5-4-1 away from home. The Chaps will be back at home again next weekend, beginning Lone Star Conference play with a game against UT Permian Basin on September 26. Including this weekend's road games, they will play away from home eight more times this season.

AWARD CENTRAL
Lubbock Christian sophomore forward Fernando Flores was named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday. Flores led the Chaps to a pair of wins over the weekend, scoring four of the team's six goals against Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma Baptist. The Mexico native scored twice in the final eight minutes of last Thursday's match against the Crimson Storm, converting a penalty kick first before scoring the game winner in the 89th minute. He opened the scoring with another penalty kick in the win over OBU and added on with an unassisted goal in the second half. Flores tallied 13 total shots, eight of which were on goal during the weekend.

SCORING IN BUNCHES
The Chap offense currently No. 26 in the nation and is tied for the Lone Star Conference lead in scoring, averaging 2.50 goals per game. That number is up from 2018, when LCU averaged 1.74 goals per game, and significantly up from 2017's average of .89 goals per game. Flores leads the way for the offense with five goals, but Tariq Bakkali also has three, and Pablo Galietero Diez
and Mohammed Busaidy have both scored as well. Fellow LSC member Texas A&M International is also averaging 2.5 goals per game.

DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE
LCU's back line has proved to be hard to score against through the first two weekends of the 2019 season, posting a goals against average that ranks 30th in the nation. The Chaps have shut out two opponents already this year and allowed just one goal in each of their other two games, bringing their team goals against average to .667. This is down more than half a goal per game from last season, when opponents scored an average of 1.21 goals per game against LCU. Jonathan Woods is the only LCU defender to play every minute so far this season, but he has been joined on the back line by Ivan Muanze-Bengono, Niklas Neumann, Jasper Reese, Connor Dean, Andrew Gansen and Noah Johnson.

SCOUTING CONCORDIA
  • The Cavs are 2-2 so far this season and coming off a 2-3 loss at Sonoma State last weekend
  • Nicholas Denley leads the team in points scored with five, having netted a pair of goals and assisting on one other score
  • CU went 7-9-1 during the 2018 season, finishing in fourth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference
  • Head men's soccer coach Dan Birkey is in his 32nd season leading the Cavs' men's soccer program, and his 388 career wins rank 21st among active Division II coaches
  • Kenneth Symmes has started three of Concordia's four games in goal, making 11 saves while allowing seven goals
