Highlights
Despite a career-high performance from
Hannah Thomas, Lubbock Christian University was unable to rally from a 9-5 deficit in the fifth set, falling in the set 15-13 to West Texas A&M. The decisive set win allowed WTAMU to take the opening game of the season-long Rivalry on the Range. The loss also was LCU's first Lone Star Conference loss, placing them 1-1 in conference play. Thomas completed a double-double, setting a career high in digs (12) and matched a career high in kills (17). Teammate
Bradi Marshall joined her in the double-double category with 47 assists and 11 digs for her seventh double-double in an eight-game span. Torrey Miller had a game-high 26 kills (completed a double-double with 12 digs), for the Lady Buffs, who also received 34 digs from Chandler Vogel. Sadie Snay also had a double-double for WT with 44 assists and 10 digs.
How It Happened
Set One:
LCU led early, jumping out to a 6-2 advantage on a kill from Thomas. She had six of LCU's 14 kills in the set, including a pair during a 7-0 LCU run to extend their lead to 22-12. LCU had a .355 attack percentage in the set en route to a 25-17 set win. Marshall had 13 assists and four digs in the set for LCU.
Set Two:
The second set had five lead changes (the most of any of the sets), and LCU led 12-11 before things went downhill. WTAMU went on a 14-2 run to close the set with a 25-14 set win. Miller provided the Lady Buffs four of her seven kills in the set during the scoring surge.
Set Three:
Carrying over the run from the prior set, it would turn out to be a 24-4 run for WTAMU, as the Lady Buffs opened the third set on a 12-2 run. They had no problem claiming the set 25-12, taking advantage of a 12-6 kill advantage and five serving aces. Three of the aces were by Vogel and took place over a five-point stretch. Vogel also had nine digs in the set.
Set Four:
It initially appeared the Lady Buffs would continue rolling, as they received four kills from Miller in the opening six WTAMU points to take a 6-2 lead. Trailing 12-5, LCU would finally find a spark. A serving error and an ensuing kill by
Morgan Schwarz resulted in a 7-0 LCU run to tie the set 12-12. WTAMU had a 17-12 kill advantage in the set, but eight attack errors and four serving errors in the set allowed LCU back into the match. WTAMU led 23-21 before a kill by
Avery Moore was followed by a pair from Thomas and LCU ended the set on a 4-0 run for a 25-23 set win to force a fifth set. Moore and Thomas each had four kills in the set for LCU.
Set Five:
After a pair of early attack errors early in the fifth set, LCU had a 3-1 lead. The Lady Buffs had one attack error the rest of the way. They then went on an 8-2 run, with four of the points coming on LCU errors (attack and serve), to take a 9-5 lead. Moore capped a 4-1 LCU run to cut the deficit to 10-9. WTAMU led 13-10 and 14-12 before a late kill by Schwarz cut the Lady Buffs lead to 14-13. A kill by Samantha Jorden for WTAMU extinguished any hopes of an LCU comeback, as the Lady Chaps lost the final set 15-13.
