CONFERENCE SZN
This Thursday's matchup with Texas A&M-Commerce will mark the beginning of a new era for the Lubbock Christian women's soccer program as they begin play in a new conference. LCU previously competed in the Heartland Conference for the last six seasons, becoming members in July of 2013. The women's soccer team found success in that conference, going 55-37-10 in those six seasons. The Lady Chaps will look to continue that success in the new conference, which is comprised of 14 teams throughout New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma.
AWARD CENTRAL
Lubbock Christian came close to sweeping the Lone Star Conference weekly women's soccer awards, as Lady Chaps claimed both the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards.
Celia Duarte was the offensive winner after scoring four goals and assisting two other during the two wins over WBU and UTPB. The Lady Chaps also posted a pair of shutouts in those two games and allowed just two shots on goal, which helped
Hailey Phipps claim the league's defensive award.
OFFENSIVE OUTBURST
The Lady Chap offense seems to have gotten hot at the right time, judging by the number of goals scored in their last two games. They opened last weekend with a five-goal performance against former Sooner Athletic Conference foe Wayland Baptist. They then followed up with 11 goals in a nonconference contest against UT Permian Basin. LCU has now upped their goals per game average this season to 3.8 after averaging 1.2 per game last season.
AN EYE ON THE NUMBERS
Lubbock Christian goalkeeper
Hannah Wise has been a starter for the Lady Chaps pretty much since she walked on campus. Now in her junior year, the Midlothian native is drawing close to breaking a number of program records. Wise ranks second in LCU history in saves (120), wins (19), goalie games played (40), and goalie minutes played (3583). In every category, she trails only Lauren Story, who spent time in goal for the Lady Chaps from 2012-2015.
SCOUTING TAMUC
- The Lions are tied for the second-best defense in the Lone Star Conference, having given up only two goals through the first five games of the season (.40 per game average)
- A&M-Commerce goalkeeper Jen Peters has the second most saves in the league at 31 and the second best save percentage at .939
- Head coach Neil Piper has been at TAMUC since 1998, compiling an overall record of 238-127-37 and winning six LSC titles
- Leslie Campuzano leads the Lions with 19 shots and five shots on goal, but she has just one goal on the year
- The Lion offense has scored eight goals through the first five games, averaging 1.6 per game so far
THE SERIES WITH THE LIONS
Lubbock Christian and Texas A&M-Commerce have faced off just once in program history – on September 15, 2015. TAMUC won 4-0 with a multi-goal game from Julia Hernandez.
