Highlights
An LCU program record (since sideout scoring) 18.0 team blocks was not enough to extend LCU all-time series win streak to 16 matches over the Falcons, as UTPB claimed their first win over LCU since Oct. 3, 2006 and their first win in Lubbock since Sept. 5, 2006. The two teams combined for 35.0 blocks, as UTPB had 17.0 in the contest. The blocks led to a combined 72 attack errors, with LCU charged with 40. Travana Mathews led UTPB with four solo blocks and nine total blocks. The blocks and the UTPB victory shadowed a solid performance by LCU's
Avery Moore, who posted a career high in kills (23), blocks (6, 3 solo) and points (27.5). She had a .327 hitting percentage and eight digs as well.
Bradi Marshall produced a double-double for LCU with 49 assists and 18 digs. She also produced three kills and five blocks in the contest.
Jalee Sims led LCU in digs with a career-high 27. The loss places LCU with a 2-3 division record, as they are halfway through division play (standings in the LSC are based on division play and not conference records).
How It Happened
Set One:
The opening set was never separated by more than a three-point margin. Midway through the set turned streaky, as four team blocks by LCU resulted in a 6-1 run to give LCU a 15-12 lead. UTPB responded with a 9-3 run (included a 7-1 stretch) to provide the Falcons a 21-18 advantage. They were able to claim the set with a 25-23 set win behind four blocks and a pair of kills from Skyler Friel and four kills from Aquincia Strambler. LCU had five kills from Thomas, while also receiving 12 assists from Marshall and nine digs from
Maddie DeGuire.
Set Two:
The second set was tightly played as well, until LCU, leading 14-12, went on a 7-4 scoring streak to take a 21-15 lead. The run was the difference, as LCU, behind five kills in the set from Moore, claimed the set 25-18. LCU produced 14 kills in the set (14-8 advantage over UTPB), with six different Lady Chaps claiming at least one kill.
Set Three:
An up-and-down set, UTPB jumped out to a 9-3 advantage, but would end up calling a timeout after LCU's 4-0 run cut the Falcons lead to 9-7. The Falcons responded from the timeout outscoring LCU 13-6 and building their lead to 22-13. The lead was not safe, as LCU went on an incredible 11-0 run to take a 24-22 lead. LCU nearly relinquished the lead, as UTPB countered with a pair of points to tie the set 24-24. An attack error by LCU, followed by a block from Marshall helped LCU win the set 26-24. Moore produced seven kills in the set for LCU.
Set Four:
UTPB was a little shaken after their third-set collapse, falling behind 6-3 early in the set, but they used a 6-0 run to get their confidence back. Tied 18-18, the Falcons closed the set on a 7-1 run to win the set 25-19 and force a decisive fifth set. Five different Falcons had at least two kills in the set, with Stephanie Sanchez's three kills leading the team. Moore led LCU once again, posting five kills in the set.
Set Five:
There were six lead changes in the final set. LCU used a 4-0 run to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 10-8 lead, leading the Falcons to call a timeout. The answered from the timeout by tying the set at 11-11, leading LCU to call a timeout. LCU took a 12-11 lead off a kill by
Sage Chain, but the Lady Chaps would go empty-handed the rest of the way. UTPB received a kill from Grace Talbert before LCU had a trio of attack errors (one by a combo block) to give the Falcons a 4-0 run to close the set and match with. UTPB posted 6.0 blocks in the final set, with four by Mathews. She also posted three kills in the set.
