Location: Rip Griffin Center - Lubbock, Texas

Highlights
It was not pretty, but ask the Lady Chaparrals if they mind. The Lady Chaps, held to a combined 23 points through the first two set losses, were able to storm back from the 2-0 match deficit and take the final three sets for a dramatic 3-2 win over Texas A&M – Kingsville inside Rip Griffin Center. The meeting was a non-conference tilt between two Lone Star Conference foes. LCU's prior game Saturday against UTPB witnessed LCU produce a record 18.0 blocks and the two teams combine an LCU single-match record 35.0 blocks (since rally scoring began).  Those numbers were nearly met Tuesday, as LCU had 16.0 blocks and Texas A&M – Kingsville had 18.0 blocks, leading to a combined 34.0 blocks. The blocks led to some low percentages, as LCU had their lowest hitting percentage (.012) in a victory in program history. The two teams combined for 64 attack errors. Avery Moore produced her first career double-double in the win with 10 kills and 10 digs. Teammate Hailey Cournoyer had eight blocks and seven kills in the win as well. TAMUK was supported by 13 kills from Melanie Casteel, 10 kills and seven blocks from Kapri Pelle and a double-double from Emily North, who had 15 assists and 10 digs.

How It Happened

Set One:
LCU's attack was struggling against TAMUK's front line in the opening set, as the Javelinas recorded 9.0 blocks in the set. Kailey Estrada (two solo) was responsible for six blocks in the set for the Javelinas. LCU had a -.303 attack mark with just one kill in the set. They were charged with 11 attack errors. TAMUK had a 12-5 run in the set and closed with a 7-0 run to hold LCU to their lowest point total in an individual set at home this season, as TAMUK won the set 25-11.

Set Two:
Things were not much better for the Lady Chaps in the second set, as TAMUK cruised to a 25-12 set win. LCU did have seven kills in the set, with setter Bradi Marshall producing three of them. The Lady Chaps were still in the negative for the set (-.068), as they still had 10 attack errors. Four were via blocks by the Javelinas. Melanie Casteel led TAMUK in the set with four kills. The Javelinas opened the set with a 7-1 run and also used a 7-2 and 6-1 rally in the set.

Set Three:
The Lady Chaps looked themselves in the third set. Consecutive serving aces by Hannah Thomas helped LCU open with a 7-2 advantage. They maintained the lead the entire set, claiming the set 25-19 behind five kills in the set by Hailey Cournoyer and four by Ashley Vanfleet. They produced a 14-10 kill advantage over TAMUK (LCU hit .300 in the set) and Bradi Marshall had 12 assists in the set for LCU.

Set Four:
LCU built off the third set momentum and started to steal the momentum in the fourth set, which featured eight lead changes and the score tied 12 times. The score was never separated by more than two points and the teams were locked up 17-17 until Morgan Schwarz produced a kill to break serve and give LCU the serve. After a ball handling error made it 19-17 LCU, TAMKU called a timeout. They would cut the LCU lead to 19-18 before LCU went on a 3-1 run. Leading 22-21, LCU forced a fifth set with Moore, Thomas and Marshall each garnering kills for a 3-0 stretch to close the set for a 25-21 LCU set win. LCU had a 14-8 edge in kills during the set, with Moore producing five kills. Marshall assisted on 11 LCU kills.

Set Four:
Playing in their second straight match to include a decisive set, LCU fell behind early. Melanie Casteel bookended an Emily North ace with kills to complete a 3-0 run, which gave the Javelinas a 4-1 advantage. LCU answered with a 6-0 run started with a kill from Marshall. Four of the points in the run were off attack errors. Leading 7-6, LCU produced another 6-0 run, with all six points produced off Javelina errors (two solo blocks by Schwarz in the mix). The run gave LCU a 13-6 lead and they won the set 15-8 to complete the comeback. TAMUK had 11 attack errors in the set.

Inside the Numbers:
.100 - In the last 16 years, LCU has only produced three wins when having a hitting percentage below .100. Their prior low occurred last season (.092 on Oct. 6, 2018 vs. St. Edward's) and two have happened this season (prior to Tuesday, LCU had a .095 mark in a win over Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Sept. 12).
2-2 – LCU is now 2-2 this season in games decided in five sets.
4 – The meeting was the eighth all-time meeting the two programs and the all-time series is now tied 4-4 between the two programs.
5 – Setter Bradi Marshall finished with 31 assists and nine digs, and she garnered a career-high five kills.
5 – LCU served seven aces and five were by Hannah Thomas, who set a career high. The five aces are the most since Marshall served up eight Oct. 20 vs. Dallas Baptist, but they are the second highest single-match total by a Lady Chaps member since 2008.
7 – Of LCU's 16.0 blocks, seven were solo blocks. The seven solo blocks were the most since Sept. 18, 2010 against West Texas A&M. Morgan Schwarz led LCU with a career-high three solo blocks.
8 – Freshman Hailey Cournoyer's career high eight blocks matches an LCU individual match high this season, matching fellow Freshman Sage Chain's eight-block outing Saturday against UTPB.
10 – Avery Moore, coming off a career-high 23 kills against UTPB, set a career high in digs (10), which led to her first career double-double performance.
18.0 – TAMUK's 18.0 blocks were the most by an LCU opponent since Eastern New Mexico posted 20.0 blocks against LCU on Nov. 5, 2013.

Up Next:
LCU heads on an eastern swing this weekend, which starts off Friday in Tyler, Texas, as LCU faces University of Texas at Tyler for a non-divisional Lone Star Conference battle. It will mark the first ever meeting between the two programs.
