Lubbock Christian University got off to a good start Friday night in their first non-division Lone Star Conference contest, but things went downhill fast, as they fell 3-1 in the first ever meeting between the LCU and victorious UT Tyler. The Patriots thrived off 61 kills, nine aces and 11 blocks. Kylee Becker had 20 kills for UTT, with Christina Escamilla (12) and Hannah Callison (10) also hitting double figures in kills. Becker (20k, 13d) and Gracie Sutherland (29a, 10d) had double-double performances for UTT. LCU's
Bradi Marshall (33a, 12d) had LCU's lone double-double.
Ashley Vanfleet led LCU with 11 kills, with
Morgan Schwarz providing a solid outing with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
How It Happened
Set One:
Six different Lady Chaps had at least one kill and LCU needed every one of their 16 kills in the set to claim a 25-23 set win. The opening set included the score tied nine times and also witnessed the Patriots letting a 21-18 lead fall to the wayside, as LCU closed the set on a 7-2 run for the set win.
Morgan Schwarz walloped five kills on seven attempts for a .714 hitting percentage. Haley Cournoyer,
Ashley Vanfleet and
Hannah Thomas each provided three kills in the set for LCU, with Cournoyer also adding a pair of blocks. Marshall led LCU with 14 assists and
Maddie DeGuire added seven digs. UTT's Kylee Becker and Christina Escamilla led the Pats with four kills each.
Set Two:
The Lady Chaps went from a .250 hitting percentage mark in the first set to hitting .026 in the second set. The Patriots spoiled a late LCU rally, as LCU had bounced back from a 21-16 deficit with a 6-0 run to take a 22-21 lead. UTT closed the set on a 4-1 run with a pair of Kyana Alvarez sparking the rally. Becker moved into double figures in kills in the match, with a high of six kills in the set.
Avery Moore led LCU in the set with four kills.
Set Three:
The Patriots blasted LCU in the third set with a .514 hitting mark, while holding a 20-9 kill advantage in the set. UT Tyler erupted with a 15-3 rally in the set to cruise to a 25-13 set win. That was even with LCU producing a 5-2 run late in the set. Becker led all players again in the set, posting six kills. UTT averaged 20.8 digs per set on the night and they posted 22 in the third set, with Savannah Guzman leading all players with eight. Vanfleet led LCU with three kills in the set.
Set Four:
UT Tyler continued to roll in the third set, opening the set with a 7-0 run. They eventually led 14-3 before clinching the match with a 25-15 set win. The Patriots benefited off five aces and four blocks in the set. LCU's Schwartz hit double figures in kills, leading LCU with three in the set. Becker had a team-leading four kills in the set for UTT, who produced a .312 hitting mark in the set.
Inside the Numbers:
1 – UT Tyler takes a 1-0 all-time series lead, as the meeting was the first ever meeting between the two teams. Both programs are in their first season as members of the Lone Star Conference.

Hailey Cournoyer had a pair of solo blocks for LCU, coming one shy from her record of three earlier in the season against Black Hills State. The pair Friday place her season total of seven, which is second on the squad.
.269 – The attack percentage for UTT was .269, which is the second-highest by an LCU opponent this season. Colorado School of Mines produced a mark of .385 against LCU.
