Lubbock Christian University bounced back from a pair of losses Friday with a pair of victories Saturday, including a 3-2 win over University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) to provide interim head coach
Mandy Polk her first coaching victory. LCU followed the match with a 3-1 win over Fresno Pacific to close their stay at the Oredigger Classic hosted by Colorado School of Mines.
Karley David-McLeroy had a career outing, registering double-double performances in each match. They mark the first double-double outings of her LCU career. She combined for 26 kills (3.3 per set) and 21 digs (2.6 per set) in Saturday's two matches. LCU produced 18 aces on the day, with
Bradi Marshall recording six (she finished with 10 on the weekend). Marshall also had 92 assists (10.2 per set), 19 digs and five blocks on the day. LCU also received great contributions on the day from
Hannah Thomas (26 kills),
Avery Moore (20 kills),
Morgan Schwarz (12 kills, eight blocks) and
Jalee Sims (35 digs).
How It Happened
Colo. Colorado Springs Match
Set One:
There were six lead changes in the opening set. The combination of eight errors (attack or serving errors) by led to LCU going on an 11-3 run for a 17-11 lead. The surge allowed LCU to claim the opening set 25-15. Despite held to eight kills in the set, LCU held UCCS to seven kills, marking the first time this season LCU had more kills than their opponent in a set (it was their eighth set played this season).
Ashley Vanfleet had two kills and two aces in the set to aid LCU in the set win. UCCS was held to a -.071 attack percentage in the set.
Set Two:
Attack errors continued for the Mountain Lions in the second set, as three occurred during a 5-0 run to start the set for LCU. A Taylor Smith ace allowed UCCS to cut LCU's lead to 17-15, but LCU responded with an 8-3 run to close the set for a 25-18 set win.
Bradi Marshall contributed 10 assists and a pair of aces in the set.
Set Three:
UCCS went into the third set with 17 kills and 18 errors, but turned things around with 15 kills and five errors in the third set, which helped them win the set 25-19. They never trailed in the set and benefited from four kills from Lauryn Shockley.
Karley David-McLeroy had four kills in the set to lead the Lady Chaps.
Set Four:
There were six lead changes and the score was tied 13 times in the fourth set.
Avery Moore and
Morgan Schwarz combined for a block to put LCU up 17-13, which was their biggest lead in the set. It would mark LCU's climax in the set, as UCCS went on a 7-2 run for 20-19 lead. UCCS had five set-point-serves before Shockley was able to get a clinching kill to force a fifth set (UCCS won the set 29-27). Shockley had six of UCCS's 20 kills in the set, as the two teams combined for 38 kills. LCU had 25 digs in the set (seven by
Maddie DeGuire) and
Avery Moore and Thomas combined for 10 kills (each with five) in the set.
Set Five:
The Lady Chaps quickly took away any momentum the Mountain Lions from the emotional fourth set win, opening the fifth set on a 9-3 run. They clinched the match with a 15-8 set win. LCU had 12 kills in the set and limited their attack errors to one in the set (LCU had a .500 attack percentage in the set). David McLeroy had the hot-hand for LCU with five kills in the set. Thomas also contributed four kills on five attempts.
Inside the Numbers:
1-0 – LCU opens the season 1-0 in five-set decisions. LCU was in five matches resulting in five sets last season and they were 3-2 in those tilts.
2 – The meeting was the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs and each have now won two matches in the all-time series. LCU's last win over the Mountain Lions was on Aug. 28, 1998 in Lubbock.

th career match, had not produced more than seven in a match.

Bradi Marshall assisted on a season-high 52 assists. The tally was her first 50+ assist of the season and the fourth of her career. The sophomore's career high is 64 from Oct. 13, 2018 vs. West Texas A&M.
75 – The Lady Chaps produced 75 digs in the set, which was more than they produced all of Friday (62).
Fresno Pacific Match
Set One:
Each team was in the negative through the first set, as each team had 12 attack errors in the set, but the Lady Chaps had the upper hand in a 25-20 set win. With the match tied 17-17, LCU took advantage of four FPU attack errors and closed the set on an 8-3 run. Marshall was well on her way to a double-double with nine assists and five digs in the opening set.
Set Two:
Both teams cleaned up their attack errors in the second set, with each team committing three attack errors in the set. Fresno Pacific surged ahead with the score tied 13-13, going on an 8-1 run. Trailing 21-14, LCU's
Karley David-McLeroy served an ace to start a 5-0 run and LCU cut the deficit to 21-19. The Sunbirds called a timeout and responded with a 4-1 run to close the set. All four points came on kills, as FPU won the set 25-20. Miska Legatova had five kills in the set for FPU, who finished 18 team kills in the set.
Set Three:
Hannah Thomas and
Jalee Sims set the table early in the third set before Marshall and David-McLeroy made their presence known in the set. Thomas had kills on two of LCU's first three points, with Sims serving up an ace and serving four consecutive serves to help LCU take a 6-1 lead to start the set. David-McLeroy had 16 attack attempts in the set, connecting on five kills. All assisted by Marshall, who assisted on 13 of LCU's 14 kills in the set. LCU claimed the set 25-16.
Set Four:
Maddie DeGuire served up a pair of aces in the final set, with her first opening the fourth set scoring. Like the prior set, LCU jumped out early.
Avery Moore had a pair of kills in the opening 7-1 run, which provided LCU early breathing room in the set. LCU led 15-5 and as much as 22-10 before clinching the match with a 25-14 set win. LCU had two attack errors in the set, while forcing FPU into 10 attack errors. LCU had 3.0 blocks in the set, with freshman
Hailey Cournoyer producing a pair of blocks.
Inside the Numbers:
1 – The win was the Lady Chaps first over FPU. The two former NAIA powers had previously met twice, including at the 2002 NAIA National Tournament in San Diego.
