LCU History: Taking a Look at October 23

Volleyball Took Down No.18 Oklahoma Baptist on the Road in 2010 On This Date

October 23 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from October 23. Pictured Melissa Green (Owings), who helped the LCU volleyball team upset No.18 Oklahoma Baptist on the road in 2010 on this date.

  • The Lady Chaps helped build a 1980 season-best four-match win streak with a pair of wins over Sooner State squads, defeating Panhandle State and Northwestern Oklahoma State in matches played in Goodwell, Okla.

  • LCU posted a NAIA District 8 victory during the 1992 season with a 3-0 win over Austin College in Sherman, Texas. Jody Hamrick led LCU with 14 digs and 12 kills for a double-double, while Tammy Lieb and Charla Durham each had 10 kills to give LCU a trio of players with at least 10 kills in the three-set match.
  • A two-match season series sweep was completed over Sul Ross in 1995, as LCU swept the Lobos 3-0 for a second time during the season. The match was hosted by LCU.
  • A 2007 win streak was extended to five matches with a 3-0 home win over UT Permian Basin. Suzanne Childress paced the Lady Chaps with a double-double consisting of 14 digs and a team-leading 15 kills. Rachel Stuyvesant (Ketcherside) had 43 assists in the three-set match.
  • Having had a nine-match win streak snapped in a five-set loss in their prior match, LCU rebounded with a home win over Southern Nazarene in a 2009 Sooner Athletic Conference match. Elissa Loynes (Bowman) had 13 kills and a .542 attack mark in the victory.
  • In 2010, LCU fought back from a 7-2 deficit and a 14-12 deficit with a trio of Oklahoma Baptist mistakes, followed by a kill from Melissa Green (Owings) to win the decisive set 16-14 and clinch the 3-2 upset over the No.18 ranked Lady Bison in a Sooner Athletic Conference road match at Noble Arena in Shawnee, Okla. Brittany Johnson (Graham) had a solid performance for LCU.  Along with her team-leading 13 kills and a .423 kill percentage, the conference's co-leader in blocks per set had six blocks in the match.  Loynes (Bowman) (12 kills, 11 digs), Jordan Goings (34 assists, 17 digs) and Bailey Jones (Hall) (10 kills, 12 digs) produced double-doubles for the Lady Chaps.
  • Channing Stewart (Castleberry) notched double-double number 10 on the 2014 season with game-highs of 17 kills and 18 digs, and Erin Fisher (Moore) dished out an average of 17 assists per set to boost Lubbock Christian's home conference winning streak to 12 games in a Heartland Conference sweep over Dallas Baptist inside Rip Griffin Center.

Women's Soccer
  • Playing through intermittent rain showers, Lubbock Christian fought to a 1-1 tie in 2010 against Oklahoma Baptist. LCU struck first with a goal from Whitley Gillit 31:03 into the match, but OBU responded five minutes into the second half.
