LCU History: Taking a Look at November 11

John Copeland (Men's Basketball - '80) and Larry Hays (Women's Basketball - '82) Each Had Coaching Debut Wins On This Date

November 11 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from November 11. Pictured John Copeland, who won his coaching debut in 1980 for the men's basketball program on this date.

  • The Chaparrals got the win in John Copeland's head coaching debut in 1980. It was also the first game on a brand-new $55,000 parquet floor that had been installed in the LCU Fieldhouse over the offseason. Bill McGee had a team-high 20 points, while Brian Fortner had 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Copeland, who took over the program from Larry Hays, would spend 31 seasons as the head coach of the Chaps, posting an all-time record of 469-435 (.517).
  • Taking on defending District VIII Champion Paul Quinn College, who had won 19 straight games and 50 of their last 60 on their home floor, Lubbock Christian shot a ridiculous 76.5 percent from the floor in a 90-74 win in the 1988-89 season. Curry Blackwell led with 23 points, while Ron Ranger added 13 points and 14 rebounds. 
  • After losing in overtime to McMurry just five days earlier, the Chaps returned the favor at the LCU Fieldhouse in 1989. Trailing 66-63 with less than a minute to go, Scott Whillock nailed a three-pointer to tie the game with 34 seconds to play, and the Indians bid at a game-winner was off the mark. Adam Hill, who led the Chaps in scoring with 31 points, scored five of them in the first two minutes of overtime to help LCU build a lead that they held onto. 
  • LCU faced off with UT Permian Basin for their 2002-03 season-opener and dominated the Falcons 92-49 in UTPB's inaugural season of men's basketball. Eleven different Chaparral players scored in the win, as LCU shot 49.3 percent from the field and held UTPB to 24.2 percent shooting.

  • The Sooner Athletic Conference announced its postseason honors for the 2011 season, headlined by Lubbock Christian's Billy Forbes, who claimed Player of the Year, Offensive Most Valuable Player, Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference First Team accolades. LCU's Byron Knowles and Jorge Martinez were each named to the All-SAC Second Team.

  • At the 1994 NAIA Southwest Region Sectional Tournament in Stephenville, Texas (Tarleton State hosted), LCU opened with a 3-2 win over Ambassador College, revenging an earlier-season loss to AC. The match went two-and-a-half hours and was the final win for the playing career of future LCU head coach Jennifer Lawrence (Craig), who had 44 assists. Amy Mangum led lCU with 15 kills in the win.
  • LCU stepped into non-conference play in 2003 with a 3-0 win over Southwest (N.M.) for a 12th consecutive victory. Stacy Simpson (Thompson) had 18 digs, 14 kills and three aces, and Mandy Polk (Moffitt) also had a double-double with 46 assists (15.3 per set) and 17 digs
  • LCU won the first of an eventual three-straight meetings against Wayland Baptist with a 3-0 win. The win was LCU's final regular season match and was Senior Day at Rip Griffin Center. No.25 LCU moved to 17-0 at home with the win on the season. Kelsey Odell (Williams) and Suzanne Childress each provided a double-double in the win.  Childress led LCU with 13 kills and had 16 digs, while Odell (Williams) had 11 kills and 12 digs. Courtney Yonke (Boyd) co-led all players with 20 digs and Rachel Stuyvesant (Ketcherside) provided a match-high 40 assists.
  • The Lady Chaparrals defeated both Oklahoma City University (3-2) and Southern Nazarene University (3-1) to advance into the championship game of the 2011 Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament in Shawnee, Okla. Senior setter Jordan Goings surpassed 1,000 assists on the season with 91 on the afternoon as part of a pair of double-doubles on the day.  In the opening match against Oklahoma City, Goings had 48 assists and 22 digs.

    Bailey Jones (Hall) led LCU in the match with 16 kills.  Brittany Johnson (Graham) and Caitlin Kender each produced 12 kills for LCU, with Johnson also adding six blocks. Goings contributed 43 assists and 20 digs for the double-double in the win over Southern Nazarene. Teammate Abby White (Dunnam) also contributed a double-double with a match-high 16 kills and 12 digs.  Jones (Hall) and Johnson (Graham) each had 14 kills to help LCU produce 57 kills.  Libero Nikki Ralston had a team high 25 digs for LCU. Prior to the matches, the Sooner Athletic Conference announced postseason honors for volleyball and leading the way for Lubbock Christian University, who had six players honored, was First Team recipients Goings, Johnson (Graham) and Jones (Hall).  Goings was also honored as the Setter of the Year and White (Dunnam) claimed Freshman of the Year accolades.
 
Women's Basketball
  • Lisa Anglin posted 17 points and the Lady Chaps claimed a 61-52 road win in Goodwell, Okla. over Oklahoma Panhandle State for the Lady Chaps first win of the 1982-83 season and the first with Larry Hays at the helm of the squad.82_83_WBB_Hays_L_Coaching
  • Oklahoma Panhandle State was the opponent again in 1995-96, as LCU defeated the Aggies 68-54 in the season and home opener inside LCU Fieldhouse.
  • LCU opened the 1997-98 season with an 80-62 win over LeTourneau inside LCU Fieldhouse.
  • Lubbock Christian and UT Permian Basin met for the first time in 2002, with LCU opening the 02-03 season with an 86-50 win over Falcons.
  • No.9 LCU opened the 2005-06 season in Shreveport, La., facing LSU-Shreveport. The Lady Pilots led 24-21 at the half, but a 63% shooting effort from the floor by the Lady Chaps in the second half led to a 61-49 LCU victory. Sierra Wilcox Lovorn finished with a game high 15-points and six assists, while teammate Kim Lloyd fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 13-points and nine rebounds. LCU finished shooting 49% (22-of-45) from the floor, which included 5-of-14 from beyond the arc. The Lady Pilots suffered shooting woes from the outside, as they finished 0-of-15 from beyond the three-point line and finished the contest shooting 29% (19-of-64) from the floor.
