Men's Cross Country
- Lubbock Christian won its eighth and final NAIA Men's Cross Country National Title in 1997. The Chaparrals finished with 40 points, easily outdistancing second-place Life (Ga.) College. The race, hosted in Kenosha, Wis., was held on a course made somewhat treacherous by six inches of snow, and it also snowed during the race. Daniel Kibungei paced the LCU effort, taking third individually with a time of 26:16. LCU head coach Darrell Price retired at the end of the academic year, and the school ended the cross country and track program. It was restarted in 2006.

- Wayland Baptist was shedding tears of joy after defeating the LCU for the first time in eleven years with a semifinals win at the 2008 Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, but the Lady Pioneers were shedding tears of sorrow two days later at Abe Lemons Arena (Oklahoma City, Okla.), as the No. 25 Lady Chaparrals defeated Wayland Baptist 3-1 to receive the conference's lone automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships.
