LCU History: Taking a Look at November 21

Volleyball Clinched NAIA National Tournament Berths in '98 and '09, and Sierra Lovorn Notched 1,000 Career Points On The Basketball Hardwood On This Date

November 21 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from November 21. Pictured are members of the 1998 LCU volleyball squad, as they clinched a berth to the NAIA National Tournament on this date with a regional title.
 
Men's Basketball

  • Angelo State built a 10-point second half lead before Val Underwood came off the bench to neutralize their inside attack, allowing the Chaps to come back and win 66-58 in 1982. Harold Jones scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Tony Jones scored 13 points and added 10 assists. 
  • Jimmy Moore blocked a Sul Ross State three-pointer and Adam Hill grabbed the rebound and was fouled, heading to the line for a one-and-one with 10 seconds left. Hill hit both foul shots, putting the game out of reach for LCU to win 77-74 in 1987. Glenn Seale led the Chaps with 20 points, 18 of which came from behind the arc. 
  •  Lubbock Christian scored 64 second half points en route to a 115-62 win over Southwest (N.M.) in 2013, setting a new Rip Griffin Center scoring record in the process. Quay Johnson and Ridrell Holman contributed 15 points each, and the Chaps got 14 points from Eli Baker. LCU scored 60 of its points in the second half. 
  • Five Chaparral players finished in double-figures, led by A.J. Luckey's 25, in a 95-78 win in the 2015 home-opener. LCU hit 32-of-53 from the floor, shooting 60.4 percent in the win. 
  • Lubbock Christian's offense surpassed the 90-point mark for the fourth consecutive game in 2016, leading them to a 93-67 win over the previously unbeaten NAIA Our Lady of the Lake. 93-67. 
  • LCU cruised to a 79-65 win inside the Rip Griffin Center in 2017 over Sul Ross State.

    Isaac Asrat led the Chaps with 23 points and another three Chap players reached double figures.
 
 
Volleyball
  • A 1998 win streak reached 23 matches with a 3-2 win over No.9 Texas Lutheran, which was to claim the NAIA Southwest Regional Tournament title in Austin, Texas. The win by No.6 LCU allowed them to clinch an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament in Chicago. Mindy Ratliff (Jones) had 28 kills and seven blocks in the three-hour match. Kechia Mason posted a double-double consisting of 38 digs and 16 kills (LCU had 125 digs as a team). Kari Drennan was key in the final two sets, with 10 of her 16 kills occurring in the span. Kari Barrett (Bezner) posted 67 assists.

  • LCU opened the 2003 NAIA Region VI Tournament with a 3-0 win over Texas Wesleyan in Houston, Texas. Beth Ratliff (Lankford) (13) and Julie Williams (12) combined for 25 kills.
  • The No. 20 Lady Chaparrals advanced to Sioux City, Iowa, which served as the final site of the 30th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship, as they defeated St. Thomas (Texas) 3-0 in opening round play of the 2009 National Championship at Rip Griffin Center. The Lady Chaps produced a .317 attack percentage in the match, as they balanced their production of 41 kills. Five different individuals had at least five kills in the match for LCU, with Kelsey Odell (Williams) and Bailey Jones (Hall) co-leading the squad with ten each. LCU's Jordan Goings had a match-high 38 assists and Courtney Yonke (Boyd) produced a match-high 24 digs. Yonke's 24 digs moved her past Cedarville's (Ohio) Libby Short Aker and into third place among the NAIA's all-time career dig leaders with 2,897. Of the six LCU aces, two were by Odell (Williams) and she moves into fourth all-time in career aces (140) in program history. Odell also moved into eighth all-time in program history in career kills (1,380) with her ten in the match.
 
Women's Basketball
  • Head coach Dave Carter implemented a full-court press coming out of the locker room, as LCU trailed Sul Ross 33-22 inside LCU Fieldhouse (LCU was shooting 27 percent in the opening half). The press worked, as LCU outscored the Lobos 36-22 in the half for a 58-55 win, for their first win of the 1983-84 season. Laura Geurin led LCU with 15 points.
  • Roberta Ross tallied 21 points, including four in overtime, as LCU's first win in the 1987-88 season was a 69-67 road win in Alpine, Texas over Sul Ross State in the Sul Ross State Tournament.
  • Ross was at it again in 1988, as she scored 12 points and freshman Sherry Blackwell scored 15 points to help lead LCU to a 62-54 home win over Eastern New Mexico.
  • LCU hosted Angelo State in 1992 and held ASU to 29.6% shooting from the field (14.3% from long range), as LCU won 80-59 behind 23 points from Carol Hise (10-of-13 from the free-throw line) and 17 points from Joetta Sailors.

  • LCU was able to hold off Colorado Mesa 74-73 in a tightly played contest on a neutral site floor in Gunnison, Colo. during the 2003-04 season. LCU won despite CMU having a 49.1% shooting mark (28/57), compared to 40.6% (26/64) by the Lady Chaps. The 9-5 advantage in three-point shooting proved to be the difference, with Lindsay Reeves going 5-of-12 from long range in the win for LCU. She finished with 17 points, which a point behind LCU leading scorer Val Wootan (18). Cari Bigham also provided 14 points for the Lady Chaps, who had 10 steals in the contest.
  • The Lady Chaps overcame 26 turnovers on the road, in a 2005 meeting with Texas A&M International, to defeat the Dustdevils 79-58. Ashley Hunter led LCU with 16 points.  
  • Hunter (15 points) and Kim Lloyd (14 points) combined for 29 points in Alpine, Texas in 2006 to help lead LCU to a 70-46 road win at Sul Ross State. LCU shot 50% from the field in the win, and received 11 assists from Sierra Lovorn.
  • A variety of defenses kept the Adams State Grizzlies out of sync in the second half and the No. 15 ranked Lady Chaparrals opened the 2008 Adams State Bankers Classic with a 66-54 win at Plachy Hall to improve to 5-0 on the season.
    Lovorn
    An 11-2 run to open the second half jump started the Lady Chaps offense. Brittany Blackmon and Sierra Lovorn, who each posted a game-high 14 points, combined for 21 of their 28 points in the second half.  Lovorn, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in her LCU career, also contributed a career high ten rebounds to complete the double-double.  Jordan Hampton also added 12 points.
