LCU History: Taking a Look at November 30

Harold Jones Scored 31 for MBB in '82, and WBB Had a Pair of Overtime Winners On This Date

  • November 30 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from November 30. Pictured is Harold Jones, who posted 31 points in a 1982 win for Lubbock Christian men's basketball on this date.

  • Harold Jones poured in 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting as the Chaps took down New Mexico Highlands 86-74 in 1982.

  • Lubbock Christian overcame a five-point second half deficit to beat McMurry 77-73, moving to 8-1 to start the 1985-86 season, tying their best start in program history.
  • Vernon Dobbs hit six three-pointers and scored 20 points while David Williams added in 18 as the Chaps took down Texas College 86-87 early in the 1990-91 season. 
  • LCU held McMurry to just 35.3 percent shooting, while Toby Rogers scored 16 and Drew Douglass added in 13 points in a 92-64 win over McMurry in 1992. 
  • The Chaps were good from behind the arc on five consecutive possessions in the second half to pull away and dominate Sul Ross 117-65 in 1993. Clarence Hightower and Randy Durham scored 23 points apiece. 
  • In 1996, Lubbock Christian beat Bethany College 77-60, with Jermaine Gilbreath leading in scoring with 15 points. 
  • Four LCU players finished in double figures, led by Rick Henderson's 18 (on 7-of-12 shooting) as the Chaps took down Fort Lewis College 71-59 in 1999.
  • Henderson led the Chaps in scoring again in a 2001 matchup with Langston College, scoring a season-high 28 points in the 80-61 win. LCU shot 49.2 percent in the win. 
  •  In 2009, the Chaps moved to 2-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, beating Wayland Baptist 66-59 at the Rip Griffin Center. Al Duvall scored a team-high 17 points, 10 of which came in the second half. 
  • Lubbock Christian overcame a 13-point first half deficit and a nine-point second half deficit with a double-double from Matt Read and solid play from Clay Roberts to lead LCU to a 63-58 victory over Wayland Baptist in 2010. 
  • Four Chaparrals scored in double-figures during an 85-49 rout of Hillsdale Free Will Baptist in 2015. Tyler Rogers led with 19 points. 
  • In the final non-conference game of 2019, Lubbock Christian blew out Oklahoma Panhandle State 95-56. Three LCU players set new career scoring highs in the win, with Ty Caswell scoring 21, Silas Crisler netting 20 and Cade McDowell adding in 12.
 
  • Women's Basketball
  • The day following the completion of the 1980 New Mexico Highlands Tournament in Las Vegas, N.M., the Lady Chaps ventured to Santa Fe, N.M. and defeated College of Santa Fe 68-54. Darla Lynch provided a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds in the win.
  • With seven seconds remaining, Tonya Ivie hit a jump shot to put LCU ahead for a 63-62 win in Las Vegas, N.M. over New Mexico Highlands in a 1982 meeting. Lynch led the way once again, posting 18 points.

  • LCU kept Sul Ross winless during the 1993 season with an 86-38 win over the Lobos inside LCU Fieldhouse, behind 18 points from Kim Buchanan.   
  • Ginger Armacost matched the best scoring performance by a Lady Chap during the 2001-02 season, as she posted 25 points and pushed LCU to a 78-75 overtime win in San Angelo, Texas over Angelo State. Tabitha Qubty-Sellers had six steals in the victory.
  • Jordan Hampton led LCU with 19 points and carried the Lady Chaps to a 77-61 home win over Texas A&M International in 2006.
  • No.1 LCU got off to their best start under the guidance of head coach Steve Gomez (at the time) in 2012 and their second best start in program history, as the Lady Chaparrals improved to 11-0 with a 104-77 victory inside Rip Griffin Center over Oklahoma Christian. The Lady Chaps were led by a foursome of players, who each had at least 17 points. Emily Pool led the group with 20 points. Balancing out the Lady Chaps offensive attack was Haley Burton (19 points), Kelsey Canavan (18 points) and Courtney Wilson (17 points). They also received 10 points from Haley Fowler to give LCU five players in double-figures.
  • In 2017, No.7/8 LCU fell one block shy of tying the Rip Griffin Center, as they produced 13 blocks, and Maddi Chitsey led the Lady Chaparrals in scoring for a third straight game, with 17 points in a 79-47 win over Southwest (N.M.). Chitsey produced her first double-double of her LCU career in the process, adding 11 rebounds in the game.  She also provided a career high four blocks and was one seven different Lady Chaps to produce at least a block in the game.
  • Caitlin Cunyus went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in overtime to cap a 17-point and nine-rebound performance to help No.1 LCU survive with a 68-63 overtime victory over Central Oklahoma in their final game of the 2019 St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic inside Bill Greehey Arena (San Antonio, Texas).
