LCU History: Taking a Look at November 9

Women's Soccer Set a Program Single-Season Wins Mark in 2019 With Their 13th Win On This Date

November 9 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from November 9. Pictured are members of the 2019 women's soccer team, as they set a program single-season record with a 13th win on this date.

  • Tony Jones shrugged off a 1-7 shooting night and calmly drilled a jumper from the top of the key to break a 44-all tie in the 1981-82 season-opener against Wayland Baptist. The Pioneers were then called for charging on the following inbounds play and Bill McGee hit one of the free throws, allowing LCC to win 47-44.
  • The first regular-season men's basketball game to be played in the Rip Griffin Center came on this day in 2000 and was perhaps more exciting than it was supposed to be. Huston-Tillotson built a 39-32 lead going into halftime, but the Chaps were able to come back and secure the win, thanks in large part to 21 points from James Omondi, who was one of four LCU players to finish in double-figures.
  • Jared Fears led the Chaps with 32 points and another four LCU players reached the double-digit scoring mark as Lubbock Christian shot 56.6 percent from the floor to take down UT Permian Basin 107-73 in 2004.
  • Lubbock Christian at one point had a 21-point lead in the second half, but New Mexico Highlands cut it back to just six with 4:50 remaining in a 2012 matchup. The Chaps responded, however, with a 15-3 run and held onto beat the Cowboys 79-66.
  • Rashaan Proctor led Lubbock Christian with 16 points and Brennen Fowler added 14 of his own along with nine rebounds as the Chaps opened the 2018-19 season with a win over Colorado School of Mines. The win was LCU's first over CSM in program history.

Volleyball
  • The Lubbock Christian played four competitions on this date in 1985, as they hosted the NAIA District 8 Tournament. They defeated Sul Ross and Midwestern State, but fell to Texas Wesleyan twice and finished their season as tournament runner-up. It was a heartbreaking loss for LCU, who led in the fourth set 13-8 and was two points away from a District title before TWU rallied on a 7-0 run. Stephanie Raley (Free), Sharon Marion and Michelle Hinojos were named to the All-District Team for LCU, who finished 31-12 that season (program best at the time).
  • Top-seeded LCU opened the 2007 Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament in Siloam Springs, Ark. with a 3-0 win over Southern Nazarene behind a double-double from Rachel Stuyvesant (Ketcherside) (44 assists, 14 digs) and Suzanne Childress (13 kills, 12 digs).

  • LCU opened the 2004-05 season inside Rip Griffin Center with a 99-63 win over UT Permian Basin. The Lady Chaps forced 28 turnovers (they had 17 steals) and were led offensively by Candace Clenney, who had 20 points off a 7-of-8 shooting performance from the field. Lindsay Reeves was 6-of-8 from the field and added 15 points, as LCU was 37-of-63 (58.7%) from the field in the contest.

Women's Soccer
  • In the regular season finale of the 2019 season, Lubbock Christian set a new program record with its 13th win of the year. The win came on the road against Eastern New Mexico by a score of 3-0. Arely Jimenez, Allison Scott and Haley Knesek all scored, while the LCU defense did not allow a single shot on goal from the Greyhounds.
