December 30 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from December 30. Pictured is Jeff Brush, who posted 30 points and helped LCU set a Chaps men's basketball single-game record of 76% shooting in a 1982 win over California Baptist on this date.
Men's Basketball
Shakur
- The Chaparrals jumped out to a 12-point lead in 1972 and cruised to an 84-70 win over Los Angeles Bible (Biola) at the California Invitational. Rocky Watters had a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds as LCC took third in the tournament.
- An 89-70 win over Texas Lutheran in 1980 snapped an eight-game Lubbock Christian losing streak. Larry Holt led the way with 18 points while holding the Rams' leading scorer, David Fitzke, to no points and just two shot attempts.
- Lubbock Christian set two new program records in 1982 with a 93-81 win over California Baptist. The 34 team assists in the game was a record at the time, but has since been surpassed. The Chaps also shot 76 percent from the field in the win though, which is still the program's best single game field-goal percentage. Jeff Brush led the way with 30 points on 14-17 shooting.
- LCU bounced back from a one-point loss earlier in the day by beating Sul Ross 76-62 in 1998. Benton Buckley led in points and rebounds with 21 and 9, respectively.
- The Chaps beat Sul Ross again on this day in 1999, winning 82-52 behind a team-leading 19 points from Rick Henderson.
- In 2005, Lubbock Christian shot 58.2 percent from the field (32-55) in a 88-85 win over Sul Ross. Dustin Patterson led the way with 25 points and Marques Baldwin added in 20 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
- The Chaps set the Rip Griffin Center record for three-point field-goal percentage in 2006, hitting 61.1 percent (11-18) of their shots from behind the arc in an 87-68 win over Sul Ross. Munir Shakir did the most damage from long range, making five of his six three-point attempts.
- Kenny Hewitt tallied a career-high 34 points, including 18 in the first half alone, as the Chaps held off York College for an 89-84 win in 2009.
Women's Basketball
- Despite shooting 28.1% from the field, LCU forced 26 turnovers and claimed a 1998 victory over Sul Ross State (57-48) inside LCU Fieldhouse. Christy Kirkland and Mamy N'Kolomoni each had 13 points, and Allison Mooney provided 12 points. Brandi Grider led LCU with seven rebounds and six steals. LCU improved to 10-1 on the season with the win.
- LCU went on the road in 2002 and edged out Eastern New Mexico 69-65 in Portales, N.M.
- Jordan Hampton and Ashley Hunter each had 16 points to lead LCU to a 69-54 win over LSU-Shreveport inside Rip Griffin Center in 2006. LCU was 10-of-19 (52.6%) from long range in the victory.
- Despite five points from the field in the second half and their worst shooting performance in over six years, No. 4 LCU was able to get 19 points from Tess Bruffey and a season high 15 points from Olivia Robertson en route to a 64-55 nonconference road victory over Eastern New Mexico inside Greyhound Arena (Portales) in 2017.
