AUSTIN, Texas (February 1, 2020) – Pitching in a live collegiate game for the first time since May 13, 2018, Lubbock Christian pitcher
Aaron Weseman threw six innings of one-hit ball while his offense rapped out 18 hits for a 7-4 win over St. Edward's on Saturday.
The win was LCU's second straight to start the season and clinched them their first series win of the year. They will go for the sweep at 1 p.m. on Sunday. It is also the third straight series the Chaps have won against the Hilltoppers.
LCU threatened to give Weseman a lead before he ever set foot on the mound, sending six batters to the plate in the first inning but failing to score a run.
George Mendazona led off with a single, followed by a
John Figueroa walk to put the Chaps in business. Three other Chaps reached base in the inning, but both Mendazona and Figueroa were picked off to limit the threat.
Figueroa made up for his baserunning error in the third inning, when he led off with a home run to right field, giving the Chaps the lead. He then started the scoring rally in the top of the fifth with yet another walk.
Luis Navarro also walked before
Skyler Nelson single to drive Figueroa home. Back-to-back infield singles from
Larry Leitha and
AJ Perez pushed another run across before SEU got out of the inning. Mendazona also had a solo shot, pulling a ball over the right field wall with one out in the sixth inning to give LCU a 4-0 lead.
St. Edward's finally scratched across a hit in the bottom of the sixth inning, slapping one through the left side of the infield. The runner advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, but Weseman stranded him there with a strikeout. He pitched one more frame before retiring for the day, having allowed just two baserunners while striking out six Hilltoppers.
Lubbock Christian tacked on again in the top of the seventh, as Leitha tripled to lead off the inning and
Gavy Perez-Torres doubled on the first pitch he saw to drive him in. Perez-Torres came into score a batter later on a single from
Peyton Maddox. The Chaps added one final run in the eighth, as Mendazona singled and came around to score on a double from Navarro.
Every LCU starter got a hit in the game, and six of the first nine had multiple hits. Mendazona, Navarro and Perez all had three hits in the win.
Cade Acery pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts, and
Koi Carrillo got all three outs in the eighth without allowing a baserunner to put the Chaps three outs away from a shutout. It was not to be though, as SEU batted around in the ninth, plating four runs before
Shandon Herrera came in and got a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
