OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (February 15, 2020) – The Lubbock Christian men's basketball team tried for yet another second-half comeback on the road Saturday afternoon but could not pull it off, losing to Oklahoma Christian 69-68.
The Chaps trailed by four heading into the second half and were down by as many as 10 with 3:47 left to play in the game. LCU scored 13 points from that moment on, but OC hit a layup and a pair of free throws to stay on top and win by one points.
Lubbock Christian had a chance to hit the game-winner, forcing an Eagle turnover with 14 seconds left in the game.
Aamer Muhammad attempted a three-pointer that missed with seven seconds left, and
Parker Hicks missed a second chance opportunity as OC held onto win.
The game started about as well as it possibly could have for LCU, as they hit six of their first seven shots, including three-pointers from
Ty Caswell and
Lloyd Daniels, and building a 14-7 lead six minutes into play. OC quickly closed the gap and took the lead, however, with a 13-2 run.
Both teams shot the ball extremely well in the first 20 minutes of play. The Chaps hit a ridiculous 65 percent of their first half shots (13-20) from the field, including 50 percent (4-8) from behind the arc. OC shot 53.6 percent from the field and hit just over 45 percent of their three-point attempts.
Oklahoma Christian got up by as many as seven points with 6:15 left to play before halftime, but LCU cut back into it and re-took a one point lead with just over a minute left. OC scored the final five points of the half, including a three-pointer from Aubrey Johnson with two seconds left, to take a four-point lead into the locker room.
Johnson was a big part of the reason why OC was able to pull off, as he led all scorers with 25 points, including seven made three-pointers. Johnatan Reyes added in 13 points and 10 assists, while Dedrian Parmer and D.J. Walter scored 10 and 11 points, respectively.
Lubbock Christian was up by two points with 11:34 left in the second half, but Walter hit a three-pointer to give OC the lead and spark a 20-5 Eagle run that got them up by 10 before the Chaps began their comeback effort.
Four Chap players finished in double-figures in the loss, led by Daniels, who had 19 points on 7-9 shooting and played in all 40 minutes of the game. Hicks had 16 points and Caswell finished with 12, with the two tying for the team lead in rebounds with six apiece.
Aamer Muhammad added in 10 points off the bench.
