LUBBOCK, Texas (March 6, 2020) – The Lubbock Christian baseball team played UT Tyler close through the first five innings before allowing 10 runs in the sixth as the Patriots ran away with a run-rule 14-3 win.
The loss ended a three-game win streak for the Chaps and dropped them to 6-13 on the season, while the Patriots moved to 17-2.
UT Tyler got on the scoreboard early and often, scoring in five of the seven innings. The scoring started with a leadoff triple and a single from the second batter of the game as they got a 1-0 lead off LCU starter
Ty Stephenson. The Chaps held the Patriots scoreless in the second inning and then tied the game up in the bottom of the second, drawing four walks to push a run across, but a strikeout with the bases loaded ended the threat.
Reigning NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week Austin Schneider was the starting pitcher for the Patriots, but the Chaps chased him after just three and a third innings thanks mostly to a good eye at the plate. LCU drew eight walks during his time on the mound, forcing him to throw 92 pitches in his short time on the mound.
Stephenson gave up another run in the third and one in the fourth to give UTT a 3-1 lead. LCU tied it up again one final time in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs.
George Mendazona drove in the first run with a single through the right side after a walk to
AJ Perez and a single from
Peyton Maddox started the inning.
Luis Navarro hit a ground ball up the middle and reached on an error to drive in the third and final Chap run.
UT Tyler re-took the lead with a run in the top of the fifth before really breaking things open in the sixth.
Jaden Fowler started the inning on the mound, but
Steven Dennis and
Brennen Fowler pitched as well. The pitching wasn't the main problem though, as the Chaps committed five errors in the inning, which extended much further than it should have.
The Chaps got a leadoff double from
Larry Leitha in the sixth but couldn't do anything with it. They held the Patriots scoreless in the top of the seventh but went down in order in the offensive half to end the game.
