FRISCO, Texas (March 6, 2020) – In a season that has featured a number of impressive second half comebacks, the Lubbock Christian men's basketball team looked to have at least one more in them but fell just short, losing to Angelo State 97-92 in double overtime in the Lone Star Conference Men's Championship Quarterfinal game Friday night in the Comerica Center.
The loss most likely ends the Chaps' 2019-20 campaign, leaving them with a 19-10 overall record in their first season in the Lone Star Conference. The Rams, who are now 20-7 on the year, will advance to the semifinals where they will face West Texas A&M.
LCU had as good a chance as ever to put the game away in the first overtime, as
Lloyd Daniels, the conference's second-best free throw shooter, went to the line to shoot two. Daniels made the first to put the Chaps up by three but missed the second, and ASU's Collin Turner hit a three-pointer that he banked in with three seconds to go to force the second overtime. LCU lost the momentum in the final period as the Rams finally closed out the win.
ASU's Turner set a new LSC Championship and Angelo State school record with his 47 points in the game. He did almost half of his damage from the free throw line, where he was 21-25. LCU as a team shot just 30 free throws. Turner's three-pointer to tie the game in overtime was just his second make from behind the arc in the game on his seventh attempt.
The Chaps had four players finish in double-figures, led by a team-high 27 from Hicks. The junior made eight shots, seven of which were three-pointers to match his career-high. He also pulled down 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double in the last five games.
Rashaan Proctor also had a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, which was his second of the season. Daniels added in 18 points and Caswell finished with 12.
Things almost played out in the exact same way they had on Tuesday night for the LCU offense, as they struggled to shoot the ball early, but caught fire late. The Chaps shot just 26.09 percent in the game's first 20 minutes but following up with 50 percent shooting in the second half, including seven three-pointers. LCU also turned the ball over 19 times, which was their second-highest total in a game this season.
Angelo State took its widest lead of the game with 9:42 left in the second half when Paul Williams hit a three-pointer to put them up by 25 and seemingly put the game out of reach. LCU did not give up though, and started their run on the next offensive possession with an and-one from Proctor.
The rally really started to heat up at the 6:26 mark, when Hicks hit the first of what would turn into four straight made three-pointers. By the time the horn sounded for the end of regulation, LCU had gone on a 38-15 run in just over nine minutes, tying the game to force overtime.
Momentum carried into the first overtime and the Chaps went up by four with 56 seconds to play, but ASU forced the second overtime and was finally able to put the game away.
TURNING POINT
Turner's banked in three-pointer with just three seconds left in the first overtime tied the game and gave both teams five minutes to work with but seemed to sway the momentum in the Rams' favor. LCU also ran into foul trouble outside of regulation, as Cawell,
Aamer Muhammad and
Cameron Copley all fouled out in overtime.
