WACO, Texas (March 24, 1980) - Dave Hanna fired up a two-hitter and got last-out relief help from Freddy Longoria as the Lubbock Christian College Chaparrals nipped Baylor 2-0 in the nightcap of a Monday double-header. Baylor won the first game 4-3.
The Chaps, now 17-17 on the year, will face Paul Quinn College at 9 a.m. in a double-header here today before returnnig to Lubbock for a 22-game homestand.
Baylor shortstop Matt Schaper was the only Bear who could muster a hit off Hanna, now 4-0, but his second hit -- a single -- came with out out in the seventh inning and ignited a threat by the Bears. Hanna walked the next two batters before Longoria came on to pick up the save by striking out designated hitter Tom Milam on a 3-2 pitch.
The Chaps picked up their first ru in the second when Tim Leslie singled, went to second on a sacrifice by Kenny Toney, and scored on a single to left by Karl Mahan. LCC added it other run when Steve Brigante led off the sixth with a solo home run to left -- his sixth circuit clout of the year.
In the first game, Baylor pitcher Jerry Arnold went the distance, scattering seven hits. The Bears scored two runs in each the first and the fifth innings off loser Noel Delgado. Fritz Connally and Mark Simon had two hits each to pace Baylor, now 12-11-2 overall.
Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, LCC got a run back when Baylor second baseman Brent Lummus booted a two-out grounder with men on first and third. The Chaps went ahead briefly in the top of the fifth when Richard Bowles and Brigante opened the frame with a pair of singles. After Leslie sacrificed both runners up a base, plate umpire Denny Copeland called a balk on Arnold to score Bowles. Brigante then ame in on an infield out to put LCC up 3-2.
The Bears wasted little time regaining the lead as Connally and Greg Penninggton hit singles with two out and Lummus followed with a single that got pas centerfielder Jimmy Durham to score both runners.
The Chaps will open with Tim Leslie, 1-2 on the year, and Paul Wright, 2-1, on the mound against Paul Quinn tomorrow. Paul Quinn owns a 7-10 record.
