LCU History: Taking a Look at September 1

Men's Soccer Claimed Their First Shutout in Program History On This Date

September 1 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from September 1. Pictured is Alistair Caldwell, who claimed LCU men's soccer's first shutout in program history in 2010 on this date.
 
Football
  • The first LCU football game was played in 1979 at Lowery Field, with LCU falling to McMurry 35-6.

Men's Soccer
  • In the second game of the

    Jackson
    inaugural 2010 season of men's soccer at LCU, Cloyce Session came off the bench and scored the game's only goal as the Chaps beat McMurry 1-0. Alistair Caldwell came away with the shutout in goal, which was the first in program history. 
  • Lubbock Christian got down 2-0 early at Our Lady of the Lake in a 2011 matchup, but came back and won 4-3 thanks to goals from Pernell Nembila, Byron Knowles and Billy Forbes, who scored twice in the win. 
  • The Chaps won again against Our Lady of the Lake in 2012 with another multi-goal performance, this time from Quinton Jackson. Lubbock Christian took 20 shots in the win while limiting the Saints to just eight.
 
Volleyball
  • LCU opened the

    Childress (Mocny)
    1994 season at the Lady Pioneer Classic (Plainview, Texas), making short work of Southwest (N.M.) with a 2-0 victory. They opened the first match with an 11-1 lead to set the tempo to the sweep.
  • The Lady Chaparrals moved to 4-0 in 1997 with a 3-1 victory against Abilene Christian, in LCU's home opener. April Willis (Cecava) produced 12 kills and had seven blocks, and DeAngela Hill Sanders had 12 digs and 10 kills to complete a double-double performance.
  • Mindy Ratliff (Jones) had 21 kills and Karen Gasch (Escamilla) had 16 kills (no errors) on the day to help LCU defeat Western Montana and Embry Riddle (Ariz.) in the 2000 Seaside Invitational in San Diego, Calif.
  • LCU opened their home portion of the 2006 schedule with a 3-0 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State, followed by a 3-2 win over Hardin-Simmons.
  • Suzanne Childress (Mocny) combined for 27 kills and added 29 digs, as she posted a pair of double-doubles in 2007, helping LCU claim 3-0 wins over Mary Hardin-Baylor and Southwestern Assemblies of God. Rachel Stuyvesant (Ketcherside) combined for 88 assists and 20 digs in the home wins.
  • Lubbock Christian University claimed a big win at the 2012 Las Vegas Invitational, defeating No.7 Rocky Mountain College 3-1. Caitlin Kender led LCU with 18 kills and produced two of LCU's 12 aces in the match.
  • LCU's 2017 season opener resulted in a 3-0 victory over Westminster College (Utah) Concordia Portland Labor Day Weekend Invitational (Portland, Ore.). They produced 48 kills in the match, with Lauren Zoller notching a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs.
  • Zoller also found success in 2018 in the Westminster Invitational (Salt Lake City, Utah) with a 15-kill performance to lead LCU to a 3-0 win over Fort Lewis College.
 
Women's Soccer
  • The Lady Chaps beat

    Boone
    UT Permian Basin 2-0 in their 2016 season-opener, with Jamie Boone scoring both goals in a span of about six minutes. LCU outshot UTPB 21-5 in the win and limited the Falcons to just two shots on goal.
  • Freshman Brooke Wendl scored her third game-winner in as many games as the Lady Chaps won a defensive 2012 battle against Our Lady of the Lake 1-0. In the 78th minute, she received a pass from Jessica Barrera at the back of the box, dribbled between two defenders, and sent the ball to the top right corner of the net to break the 0-0 tie.  The clean sheet was made in part by freshman goalkeeper Kayla Wilkinson, who made an outstanding save on a free kick from just outside the box with 5:40 remaining in regulation.
