LCU History: Taking a Look at January 10

WBB's Nettie Gibreath Set LCU's Single-Game Scoring Mark (37 points) in '87 and Serra Lovorn Became LCU's All-Time Assists Leader in '08, While MBB Defeated No.22 Okla. City in '13

January 10 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from January 10. Pictured is Nettie Gilbreath, who posted a LCU women's basketball single-game program record 37 points in 1987 against New Mexico Highlands on this date.

  • The Chaps overcame deficits of seven and eight points on the way to a 1984 win over Dallas Baptist by a score of 67-62. Five different LCU players reached double-figures, including a team-leading 21 from Harold Jones. 
  • Leslie Wallace poured in a team-leading 24 points in an 85-69 win over St. Edward's in 1995.
  • In 2002, Lubbock Christian took down St. Gregory's 63-56 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, as Dusty Middleton led the Chaps with 16 points. 
  • Four different Chaps finished in double-figures, led by 18 apiece from Brandon Jones and Lance Boxell as LCU took down Oklahoma Baptist 83-78 in 2004. 
  • Kyle Taft scored 27 for Oklahoma Christian, but no other Eagle reached double-figures as the Chaps won 66-59 in 2008. D.J. Cameron was LCU's leading scorer with 17 points. 
  • No.22 Oklahoma City University rallied from a 66-61 deficit with 45 seconds left and converted a tip-in at the regulation horn to force overtime, but Lubbock Christian University, riding off a career-high 25-point performance from Freshman A.J. Luckey, pulled away with a 13-0 run in overtime to claim an 81-71 Sooner Athletic Conference upset victory in 2013.

  • In LCU's 1980-81 Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) opener inside LCU Fieldhouse, the Lady Chaps opened the second half on a 16-4 run and shot 50% in the half (shot 24% in opening half) to defeat Austin College 56-37 behind 17 points and nine boards from Darla Lynch.
  • Nettie Gilbreath posted an LCU single-game record 37 points (also added 13 rebounds to complete a double-double), with 27 points in the opening half, and LCU topped New Mexico Highlands 76-65 inside LCU Fieldhouse in 1987.
  • A 1988-89 four-games-in-five-days road trip made a stop in Brownwood, Texas, where LCU edged Howard Payne 62-59. Suzanne Copeland tallied four straight points with three minutes remaining to give LCU a lead they would hold the rest of the way. She finished with 18 points.
  • In the 1993-94 season, LCU hosted Cameron inside LCU Fieldhouse and posted a 70-56 victory. Carol Hise had 17 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, as teammate Joetta Sailors had four three-pointers in a 14-point outing.
  • Inside Rip Griffin Center in 2002, LCU produced a 72-62 Sooner Athletic Conference win over St. Gregory's, backed by 21 points and eight rebounds from Shelbye Williams.
  • LCU survived 24 turnovers and received 15 points from Cari Bigham to claim a Sooner Athletic Conference road win in Shawnee, Okla. over Oklahoma Baptist 63-61 (at Noble Complex) in 2004.
  • Sierra Lovorn became LCU's all-time career assist leader, as her 10 assists helped the No.11 ranked Lady Chaps to a 59-42 win over Oklahoma Christian at Rip Griffin Center in Sooner Athletic Conference play in 2008. Lovorn entered the game nine assists shy of Tabitha Qubty-Sellers mark of 374 career assists from 2000-2004, and with under eight minutes remaining in the second half, Lovorn connected a pass to Kim Lloyd, who converted the score for Lovorn's ninth assist of the games and 375th of her LCU career.  Jordan Hampton scored a game-high 18 points in the win and Carolyn Manning also contributed with 12 points and nine rebounds.
  • In 2009, the No. 6 Lady Chaparrals used a late 9-0 run to edge Science & Arts (Okla.) 70-68 in Sooner Athletic Conference competition at Rip Griffin Center. The LCU run started with 4:22 remaining in the contest.  Trailing 64-58, Jordan Hampton, who finished with a game-high 15 points, hit a three-point basket to cut the deficit to 64-61. A pair of free throws from Bailey St. Clair and a field goal by Severyn Smith erased the deficit and gave the Lady Chaps a 65-64 lead with 2:46 left.  The Lady Chaps never trailed from that point.  USAO had the ball for the final ten seconds but never was able to get off a final shot.
  • Tess Bruffey (19 points) and Bailey Haist (17 points) combined for 36 of Lubbock Christian University's 46 points off the bench, and LCU rebounded from a 10-point second half deficit to defeat Oklahoma Christian 69-64 in 2013 at Eagles' Nest (Oklahoma City, Okla.) in Heartland Conference play.
  • No.3/5 LCU held Rogers State to six two-point field goals and Caitlyn Cunyus' 14-point performance topped a foursome of Lady Chaparrals in double-figures, as LCU marched to a 70-38 victory over Rogers State inside Expo Center in their first Heartland Conference road test of the 2017-18 season.
  • LCU had been plagued by turnovers on the road during the 2018-19 season, but things were different in their Heartland Conference opener inside Kinesiology and Convocation Building (Laredo, Texas). The Lady Chaps limited themselves to seven turnovers and produced 17 steals en route to an 89-39 victory over Texas A&M International. Ashton Duncan led LCU with 12 points.
