LCU History: Taking a Look at January 15

LCU Men's ('98) and Women's ('04,'11) Basketball Teams Have Enjoyed Defeating Nationally Ranked Programs On This Date

January 15 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from January 15. Pictured is Chad Elliot, who helped the men's basketball program upset No.4 Oklahoma Christian in 1998 on this date.

  • Despite earning technical fouls for having six men on the floor and for calling a sixth timeout, Lubbock Christian overcame a nine-point deficit to take down Texas Wesleyan 75-70 in 1977. 
  • Bill McGee scored 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting and another four Chaps reached double-figures as LCC took down Wayland Baptist 75-71 in 1980. 
  • Five different Lubbock Christian players reached double-figures, led by 14 from Barry Kirk as the Chaps scraped out a 67-64 win over Tarleton State in 1983.
  • In 1985, Val Underwood recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and the Chaparrals never trailed in a 61-54 win over McMurry.
  • Randy Durham scored 23 points and led LCU in scoring for the second-straight game in 1994 as LCU dominated Oklahoma Panhandle State 81-69. 
  • Lubbock Christian earned a massive road upset in 1998, taking down No. 4 Oklahoma Christian 76-67 at the Eagle's Nest. Chad Elliot was a major factor, scoring a game-high 23 points and pulling down nine rebounds. 
  • Jared Fears scored 21 points to lead five LCU players in double-figures as the Chaps earned an 85-74 win over USAO in 2004. 
  • In 2005, Lubbock Christian took down Oklahoma Baptist 78-69 for their second-straight win. 
  • Matt Read led a balanced Lubbock Christian University attack with 17 points and the Chaparrals nailed 18 consecutive free-throws to march past John Brown University 81-65 in 2011.

  • LCU had been 0-8 in games played on this date, until 2004, as they followed a road win at No.10 Oklahoma Baptist with a home victory (69-65) over No.15 Science & Arts (Okla.) for a second straight win over a nationally ranked opponent. Tabitha Qubty-Sellers led LCU with 14 points in the win, but the game over USAO was decided in the final moments, as Candace Clenney tallied a pair of field goals in the final 90 seconds to claim the two-point win.
  • Clenney also came up big in 2005, as she notched 26 points off 8-of-11 shooting and carried LCU to a 73-67 home win over Oklahoma Baptist inside Rip Griffin Center. Lauren Abbott (17 points) and Lindsay Reeves (11 points) each was 3-of-6 from the three-point range in the Sooner Athletic Conference win.
  • In 2011, LCU held No.19 John Brown to 18 points in the first half and received 17 points from freshman Emily Pool en route to a 63-52 upset victory in Sooner Athletic Conference play inside Bill George Arena (Siloam Springs, Ark.).

  • Haley Burton's 17 points led a foursome of Lady Chaparrals in double figures, which included an 18-rebound and 10-point double-double from Kellyn Schneider, and LCU cruised to an 81-63 Heartland Conference victory over Rogers State University in 2015 inside Rip Griffin Center. Burton had three three-pointers in the game to move into fourth on the program's career three-point list.
