LUBBOCK, Texas (January 28, 2021) – The Lubbock Christian University men's and women's track & field teams will be in Topeka, Kans. this weekend, competing at the Washburn Open.
The event, hosted by Washburn at the Indoor Athletic Facility, will feature 769 student-athletes with a total of 1,218 entries across two days. No spectators will be allowed due to COVID-19 protocols.
Overall, LCU is sending 19 athletes to compete with 28 entries. Eight of the athletes are competing on the men's side, while six will compete for the women.
Kristen Hughes,
Haley George,
Jaliyah Jackson,
Anna Salisbury,
Sydney Jones and
Daijah Baker will all be in competition for the Lady Chaps.
Both Hughes and George are jumpers, competing in the long and triple jump events. This is the second event of the year for Hughes, who placed 12
th in the long jump at the Corky Classic. She is currently the school record-holder in that event, as no jump by an LCU woman had previously been recorded.
Jackson is also currently a school record-holder, posting a time of 26.23 in the 200-meter at the Corky Classic. She will be competing in that event as well as the 400-meter this weekend. Salisbury and Jones are also competing in the 400-meter. Baker will also compete in the 200-meter after running in the 60-meter two weeks ago.
The LCU men have three jumpers going to Kansas to compete, including Mitch Stutler,
Kevin Washington and
Nathan Karseno. This will be the first meet for Karseno, but Stutler and Washington were at the Corky Classic to open the season. Stutler actually broke a program record in the long jump with a distance of 20'-11.25, topping the mark set by Larry Moorhead in 1984. All three athletes will be competing in both the long and triple jump events.
Samuel Wing,
Drake Holifield and
James Rodriguez are all signed up for the 60-meter hurdles. Wing is the only one of the three registered for a second event, and will be competing in the 400-meter as well. He claimed sixth place in that event at the Corky Classic.
The 400-meter is LCU's most heavily populated event on the men's side, including five other runners besides Wing.
Keitron Boyd,
Luke Mosley,
Michael Mendoza,
Haven Hernandez and
Jorge Ronquillo are all also running in the event.
Boyd will also be competing in the 200-meter, alongside fellow Chaparrals
Mohamed Megeno and Gregory Williams. Williams will also be running the 60-meter, and is the only LCU man to do so.
