Lady Chaps Open 2021 Season in Alabama

LCU Facing Former Championship Series Foe Prior To Season Opener

MOBILE, Ala. (January 29, 2021) – No.19 Lubbock Christian University opens the 2021 University of Mobile Classic with a pair of contests to open play for 2021 at UM Softball Field, marking the second consecutive season LCU has opened the season in Alabama.

 LCU and UM Series Snapshot
  • LCU has a 2-1 all-time series lead over Mobile.
  • The first two meetings came on May 21, 2008 in Decatur, Ala., as LCU beat UM 5-4 and 2-1 in the championship series to win the NAIA National Championship. All three prior meetngs were in Decatur in 2008.
  • LCU is 2-2 all-time against Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) programs.

  • The Lady Chaps are 2-1 all-time against Mississippi based programs.

Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their seventh season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their second season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season.
 
Opening Day
  • LCU is 13-0 all-time in season openers.
  • Six of LCU's season openers have resulted in shutout wins.
  • On Feb. 13, 2008, LCU's season opener and inaugural game in program history resulted in a 15-0 no-hit victory over Southwest (N.M.).
  • Last season, LCU opened the season with a 5-4 win over No.9 Florida Tech, in a nine-inning extra-inning contest in Gulf Shores, Ala.
  • This season marks the second consecutive season LCU is opening the season away from home. Prior to last season, the last time LCU opened the season away from home was their 2013 opener (10-0 win over Eastern New Mexico in San Antonio, Texas).
 
Last Season
  • LCU went 20-6 last season (COVID-shortened) and was tied for fitfth in the Lone Star Conference with a 5-3 conference mark at the time the season ended.
  • LCU was 8-0 against nationally ranked programs.
  • The Lady Chaps went 5-2 in neutral site games last season.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is beginning his 11th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering the season with a softball record of 418-128.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Back to Bama
  • LCU is making a return trip to Alabama, as last season's season-opening weekend in Gulf Shores, Ala. was their first return to Alabama since the 2012 NAIA Softball Championships.
  • The Lady Chaps appeared in three national championship tournaments in Gulf Shores (2011, 2012, 2013) and played the 2008-2010 national tournaments in Decatur, Ala.
  • LCU has never played in Mobile.
 
National Notes
  • LCU opens the season ranked No.19 in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Poll
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs.
 
Looking at UM
  • The Rams went 32-8 last season, finishing atop the SSAC with a 16-6 conference mark at season's cancellation.
  • UM has won their last five season openers.
  • Mobile is slated to finish atop the seven-team SSAC Preseason Poll.
  • The NAIA has UM ranked No.7 in their national preseason poll.
 
Looking at MC
  • The Choctaws went 15-7 last season, and they were sitting in fifth place of the GSC standings (6-3) when the season came to an end.
  • MC is making their third consecutive season-opening trip to Alabama.
