Daniels Leads All Scorers with 17 Points

TYLER, Texas (January 3, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University's men's basketball team won its fourth straight game to start the season with a 77-62 victory against the University of Texas at Tyler on Sunday.

Four of the five Chaparral starters reached double-figures, and another three scored at least eight points. Lloyd Daniels led the way with 17 points, Cameron Copley added in a season-high 14, Rowan Mackenzie scored 12 and Parker Hicks tallied 10.

Mackenzie and Daniels got the Chaps started on the right foot with the first four points of the game, and although UT Tyler took a brief 7-6 lead, LCU was ahead 10-7 at the first media timeout. The Patriots kept the game close for a time before a three-point play by Mackenzie at the 9:56 mark and a three-pointer by Jalen Brattain extended the LCU lead to seven points. The made three-pointer by Brattain marked his first points at the college level, and he scored five more on 3-5 shooting on the night.

A jumper in the paint from Daniels with just over six minutes to play pushed Lubbock Christian's lead out to double-digits for the first time. The Chaps then went on a 7-2 run in the final two minutes of the half and lead by 15 points as both teams went into their locker rooms.

The Patriots opened the second half with a quick 7-1 run to cut the Chaparral lead back to single-digits. They even cut the deficit to just seven points at the 12:58 mark, but Lubbock Christian bounced back with a 10-2 run to get back up by 15 points with just over eight minutes to go.

The largest lead of the game for LCU came with just a minute to go as Mackenzie hit a layup. UT Tyler had one final three-pointer in them before the game ended.

For the second straight game, it was a first half run at the 9:56 mark that gave the Chaps a cushion and a 10-2 run around the 10-minute mark of the second half that kept the game out of reach.
