LCU History: Taking a Look at January 8

WBB's Ginger Armacost Set the Rip Griffin Center Record, Going 7-of-8 From Three-Point Range in 2001 On This Date

January 8 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from January 8. Pictured is Ginger Armacost, who set the Rip Griffin Center record in women's basketball with a 7-of-8 three-point outing in 2001 (record stood nearly 20 years) on this date.

  • In 1978, the Chaparrals broke an eight-game losing streak with a 63-60 win over Oklahoma Baptist. Miles Watters made a pair of free throws with just over a minute left to play, giving LCC a five-point lead, and they held on for the victory. 
  • LCC fought through an aggressive Austin College defense as they won 71-58 in 1983. Four Chaps scored in double-figures, led by Jeff Brush with 18. 
  • The Chaps earned their second straight win in 1996 when they dominated Sul Ross State 84-45 at the LCU Fieldhouse.
  • Jared Fears scored 21 points while James Horner and Brandon Jones added in 18 each and the Chaps needed every one of them as they took down John Brown 76-74 in Sooner Athletic Conference play in 2004. 
  • Kenny Hewitt exploded for 13 points in the opening eight minutes of the second half and registered his fourth career double-double and the first of the season to lead Lubbock Christian University to a 78-69 win over University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma in 2011. 
  • Matthew Alford's first career double-double and a near-perfect performance from the free throw line by the Chaps led them to a 76-69 win over Newman in 2015, leaving LCU as the only remaining unbeaten Heartland Conference team.
 
Women's Basketball
  • The Lady Chaps best defensive performance of the 1982-83 season came against Austin College, as the Lady Chaps claimed an 80-28 win inside LCU Fieldhouse. Debbie Adrian tallied 14 points to lead LCU, with 14 rebounds provided by Lori Bigham.

  • LCU defeated Sul Ross State 72-64 in a NAIA District 8 meeting inside LCU Fieldhouse in 1995-96.  
  • Ginger Armacost set the Rip Griffin Center record for three-pointers in a 7-of-8 outside shooting performance to help LCU top Wayland Baptist 81-52 in a 2000-01 Sooner Athletic Conference meeting. Armacost finished with 30 points and her three-point shooting mark stood for 20 seasons.
  • Candace Clenney led LCU with 17 points in 2005, as they defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State in Sooner Athletic Conference action 60-57 in Alva, Okla.
  • Freshman Haley Burton posted 14 points in the first half and finished with a career-high 19 points off an 8-of-10 shooting performance to lead LCU to an 81-60 Sooner Athletic Conference victory in 2011 over Science & Arts (Okla.) at Rip Griffin Center.
