LCU History: Taking a Look at January 9

MBB's Brent Derrick Posted 40 Points in 1993 Against Schreiner On This Date

January 9 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from January 9. Pictured is Brent Derrick, who posted a 40-point performance in 1993 for the men's basketball program against Schreiner on this date.
 
Men's Basketball
  • Lubbock Christian beat St. Paul, Minn. based Metropolitan State (Minn.) 86-81 in 1971, sparking a three-game win streak. 
  • Vernon Dobbs and Toby Rogers eached tossed in 19 points apiece as the Chaparrals used a 16-2 first half run and a 13-0 run in the second half to beat McMurry 70-50 in 1992. 
  • Brent Derrick had a career-game in 1993, scoring 40 points on 18-of-23 shooting. He was 7-for-12 from behind the arc as LCU took down Schreiner 100-81. 
  • In 1996, Lubbock Christian took down St. Edward's 80-73 for their third straight win. 
  • Benton Buckley and James Omondi each scored 24 points and the Chaps beat Wayland Baptist 91-68, despite no other Chap scoring in double-figures.

  • In LCU's 1981-82 Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) opener, the Lady Chaps opened the second half on a 16-4 run and later had a 17-0 run to surge past Austin College 66-38 in Sherman, Texas. The Lady Chaps used a 64-37 rebound advantage and received 13 points from Tonya Ivey and 13 rebounds from Darla Lynch.
  • Tina Hays (Phillips) (16 points) and Kim Buchanan (15 points) combined for 31 points to lead LCU to a 73-50 win over McMurry in 1992 in Abilene. Hays (Phillips) added five assists and four steals to her team-leading offensive line.
  • In 1995, LCU went on the road to Fort Worth, Texas and defeated Texas Wesleyan 80-76.
  • Another road win was claimed in 2003, as LCU went to Shawnee, Okla. and topped St. Gregory's 66-59 in a Sooner Athletic Conference meeting.
  • Renee Wilson posted a career high 15 points and teammate Severyn Smith also contributed 15 points, as No.15 LCU out-scored St. Gregoryís University 43-28 in the second half for a 76-58 Sooner Athletic Conference victory at Rip Griffin Center in 2009.
  • A 15-0 run in the second quarter and 23 points in the opening half by Kelsey Hoppel (finished with 25 points) allowed No.2/5 LCU to pull away from Oklahoma Christian 100-61 in a Heartland Conference tilt inside Rip Griffin Center in 2016.
